Hello everyone, I am about to move and want to disassemble my IKEA Billy shelf to make it easier to transport. Since the shelf has multiple shelves and a back panel, I am especially interested in what I should pay attention to during disassembly to avoid damage and ensure everything remains stable when reassembled. What is the best way to proceed, which tools are recommended, and are there any specific tips, especially regarding the back panel or the shelves? I look forward to your experiences and advice!

I think the whole thing with the BILLY shelf is like a little puzzle 😉 A tip: If you want the reassembly to go smoothly, you could label the removed parts with small sticky notes. For example, "Bottom shelf 1," "Left side panel," "Bottom of back panel" – because, believe me, once you have a box full of various boards, this is really helpful. And regarding the back panel: it’s very useful for stability, but the nails are really tough to pull out – use a piece of wood as a lever support so the shelf board doesn’t get dented. Oh, and remember to take short breaks every now and then for your nerves – moving can be stressful, but we’ll manage it 😉

First remove the back panel, then take out the shelves. Loosen the screws, carefully pull out the wall anchors, and number the placement of the parts to avoid confusion. Tools: Phillips screwdriver and nail puller. Done.

A small tip: Do not forcefully tear down the back panel. Use a spatula or a narrow lever. Completely unscrew the screws and carefully remove the wall plugs. Label everything clearly.

The back panel is the tricky part when you have to pull out the nails. It’s best to use a thin nail puller or a combination plier!

I can confirm that! 🙂 The back panel is often the toughest part, but if you take your time and work carefully, it goes well. It’s best to gently loosen the nails first with a small hammer, then you can usually pull them out more easily without damaging the parts. One more tip: When packing, don’t just stack the boards directly on top of each other. Use paper or foam padding in between to prevent scratches. Good luck with your move!
