Dear community,
We are currently in the planning phase of converting the upper floor. This would give us a terrace of 40.24 sqm (433 sq ft). The width on the south side is about 2.40 meters (7 ft 10 in), so it is rather long and narrow. Since the roof is very low at one point (1.50 m (4 ft 11 in)) on the southeast side in the slope, you cannot walk through there. Therefore, we have two doors – one on the east and one on the south side.
In the niche created on the south side, I was thinking of placing a seating area here. On the east side, facing the morning sun, a small table. On the southwest side, I would like some kind of lounge chair, like a shell chair – as a relaxation zone. An outdoor kitchen is probably out of the question here.
I would also like to have some plants on the terrace.
Since I feel quite uncreative in this regard, I would really appreciate your great opinions and tips. The terrace can be extended slightly. SLIGHTLY.
Please be patient with me if something is not clearly written.
Best regards and stay healthy!

I wouldn’t plan anything in advance. You can rearrange the furniture later.
Just put the dining table where it feels comfortable and works well with the kitchen. Place the sofas where you want them. If it doesn’t fit, rearrange.
It all comes naturally once you’re living there Yes, you’re right.
I was just thinking of planning now because we might still change the size of the terrace. Do I have enough space for furniture on a width of 2.5 meters (8 feet 2 inches) or 2 meters (6 feet 7 inches)?
It’s best to create furniture templates as if you were planning a floor plan.
2.50 meters (8 feet) isn’t much in general, but for a balcony, that’s quite a lot.
My only concern would be planning something that ends up drafty, making the whole design pointless.
It’s also common to be surprised by yourself—planning for a sunny spot but then preferring to sit in the shade because the sun is too strong.
As a general rule: the lower, the better.
Thoughts:
- The connection between kitchen and living area—this hallway will probably get the most sun.
- I would place the grill near the kitchen.
- A small seating area there too (for two people, a coffee corner, or a spot to enjoy the sunset).
- A family and guest area/lounge in the larger space, with privacy screening using tall grasses.
