Hi,

The path to our front door goes through a garden gate. I want to secure this gate with a doorbell, intercom system, and door opener. At the same time, a mailbox should be installed there so the mail carrier doesn’t have to walk through the garden every time. The mailbox and doorbell should be integrated together.

There is power available at this location, but no cable connection to the house for the intercom or door opener. Therefore, the choice will be for a wireless doorbell.

I have already found suitable mailbox/doorbell combinations where the doorbell button and speaker mounting holes are pre-installed.

So far, I have only found ready-to-install wireless doorbell systems, but none that can be built into such mailboxes.

Is it possible to take such retail systems and externally tap into the connections for the speaker and doorbell?

Any tips?

Thanks,

I haven’t looked into it yet, but I could definitely imagine that do-it-yourself systems from hardware stores can be modified in some way.

However, please keep in mind with such wireless systems, as well as with surveillance cameras, baby monitors, etc., that if there is no encrypted transmission, the signals can be received by anyone else. I find it a bit uncomfortable to imagine someone standing at your door, using the intercom to claim you owe €5000 for not paying a bill from an adult content provider, while half the neighborhood can listen in with a small, inexpensive receiver. Depending on the frequency used, interference with other wireless devices could also occur.

None of this has to happen, but it could.

Maybe there is still a possibility to run a wired connection into the house—I would prefer that myself.
