Hi,
We are currently having our house built as a turnkey project. At the time, the builder offered us a carport (storage room + 2 covered parking spaces, 2 doors, solid construction with brick cladding) for €25,000, which was too expensive for us at the moment.
An alternative layout (side storage room + 1 covered parking space, 1 door, timber) was still supposed to cost €20,000. I understand that the builder prefers to assign his staff to new builds since he currently has full order books for 2-3 years (he is really excellent, our house will be finished in 3 weeks, and so far we have no complaints).
We then decided to build the carport later. A friend who is an architect and has designed several carports for my family would draft a proposal for us. My current plan is to have the storage room built as a solid structure while I will install the covered car parking spaces made of wood myself.
Unfortunately, our plot narrows in width from wide to narrow, so standard solutions don’t work. In other words, the width of the carport starts at about 8 meters (26 feet) and narrows to about 6 meters (20 feet) after 6 meters (20 feet). After that comes the storage room with a width of approximately 6 meters (20 feet) that narrows to about 5 meters (16 feet) after 3 meters (10 feet). I’ve attached a drawing to explain it better.
I have now requested a quote for the storage room as a precast concrete garage and received an offer for €18,500 excluding crane costs.
Does anyone have an idea how I could realize the storage room more cost-effectively? The planned budget is between €6,000 and €8,000.

Build it yourself with masonry. Buying it: no way!
Your budget roughly matches the price of a standard single prefabricated garage in standard dimensions, plus the foundation. But since you need a custom layout, prefab won’t work.

Maybe a timber frame from a local carpenter could be an option.

The quote from your home builder was reasonable, but I guess you already know that by now 🙂

So even a solid wood structure (without brick, concrete, or similar materials) with simple sheet metal roofing (including vapor barrier) for a carport costs around 15,000€ (about $16,000). Painting, electrical work, and other finishing touches are not included in this price.

Have you already completed the flooring? (paving?) Because that will add extra costs on top.

Building over pipes (RR) is not the best idea, by the way. Better to go around the house once.

It’s best to consult a carpenter who can build this flexibly using timber frame construction. The exterior cladding of the carport is a matter of personal preference – it can certainly be done yourself or added later to save money.

If a photovoltaic system makes sense for the roof, I would include it right from the start... :-)

If you’re just paving over, it doesn’t matter at all. Especially if the area is open and only has a roof above it. However, you should never pour concrete or build any structure over utility lines. The utility providers would have objected during construction since they saw the as-built plans including the "carport owner work."

With 6,000–8,000€ (roughly $6,500–8,700), you could cover the materials, but you’d have to do all the work yourself. Can you manage that? Otherwise, it’s better to save for another 1–2 years until the budget fits. Don’t make a big compromise now (you’ll regret it forever), and don’t rush or overestimate your own skills. Many people wait years to build their carport or garage during construction simply because they run out of money. Around here, some delay it by 3–4 years. That’s no problem… we only planted our hedge after 2.5 years, but we had the carport done in the first spring. You just don’t have €50,000 (about $54,000) for landscaping lying around casually…
