Hello everyone,
we are planning to build a new house next year using 35cm (14 inches) Neopor insulated concrete form blocks.
I am just starting to look into the heating system. It’s hard to know where to begin.
From our current perspective, the important points are:
- Ventilation system
- The heating system must also be able to cool
- Manageable costs (who wouldn’t want that…)
In which order do you think I should approach these topics?
Many thanks and best regards,
Alexander

How does it actually work with the loops of the underfloor heating? We are planning a two-family house. So generally, two loops run from the ground floor (where the heat pump is located) to the upper floor. From there, it splits into the two residential units. And then? Distribution box, and then one thermostat and heating circuit per room. For larger rooms, possibly 2 or 3 heating circuits?
Thanks a lot for the tips, regards, Alex

Cooling through underfloor heating is more of a marketing gimmick and wishful thinking by those who have installed it.
To achieve noticeable cooling, you either need a conventional air conditioning system or, for example, chilled ceilings. Cooling the floor provides little to no effect.
How the hydraulics of the underfloor heating are designed will become clear over time, as there are several possible approaches.
The maximum size and length of the individual heating circuits are specified in the installation guidelines provided by the manufacturers.

Underfloor heating makes sense.
If gas is available, use gas. Gas heating systems are cheaper and above all simpler, less prone to malfunctions and user errors. Costs here for 110 sqm (1184 sq ft) over 12 months amount to 660 euros in gas expenses with EON. Electricity costs around 400 euros per year, so a total of about 1100 euros energy costs per year. Dividing by 110 sqm gives roughly 10 euros per sqm (1 sq ft) annually, all according to standard energy saving regulations without any KfW subsidies. So these are quite manageable costs.
We heat our domestic hot water mostly with solar energy. From Easter until now, we have used no gas support at all, and this should be possible for a few more days. After that, it will get too dark and additional heating will be necessary.
When planning home technology, don’t focus on flashy new gadgets or rocket science technology. Instead, follow the motto of British sailors: keep it simple, rugged, and reliable.
