Hello,

what are the best ways to save gas or reduce the impact of soaring energy prices? Showering together doesn’t really save 50% on energy...
Is it possible to save energy with water heating? Our tank with 160 liters (42 gallons) is probably a typical size for two people. The water temperature set at 60 degrees Celsius (140°F) is also within the normal range...

How do you manage this?

Lower the room temperature and dress warmer.
Reduce the heating flow temperature.
If there is no underfloor heating, reduce the temperature when away.
For hot water, you should set it to 60°C (140°F) if there are multiple households or if the property is rented. With a fresh water station or if owner-occupied, it can be lowered.
Use less hot water...

We ourselves only ended the pool season earlier (not due to envy policies).
Currently, there is still some yield from the photovoltaic system. The heat recovery from the controlled ventilation system almost suffices for heating.
Do not shade during the day to make use of solar gain.
We do not change room temperatures or shower habits.

I have the hot water set to 52°C (126°F) and usually only turn it on in the evening. Otherwise, the usual measures help, such as sealing windows and roller shutter boxes, insulating pipes, performing hydraulic balancing, and adjusting the flow temperature. There is plenty of information about this available on the internet.

A brief response to the initial question, as I was just thinking about it and noted down the meter reading.

We have taken the following measures:

- Switched off the heating operation on the boiler and heat as long as possible with the fireplace. This should work reliably down to temperatures around freezing point (we have already had 6°C (43°F) outdoor at night and it worked perfectly).

- Limited hot water use to 5:30-8 AM and 5-9 PM. During the day, depending on the sun, the storage tank still remains at 40-55°C (104-131°F). Currently, the solar thermal system is still producing enough so that hot water in the afternoon and evening does not have to be heated with gas, warming the tank up to 70-75°C (158-167°F) when the weather is good.

With this, we didn’t need any gas from May until the end of August, and since the beginning of September about 2 m³ per week. Last year we used around 2400 m³, and this year it’s at 700 m³ as of today. However, this still includes heating operation with the boiler from January to April (23°C (73°F) room temperature), as our wood wasn’t available yet.

When it gets really cold, I turn on the underfloor heating as little as possible if necessary and continue heating with the fireplace. That depends on whether the floor becomes uncomfortably cold. I never thought the fireplace would actually pay off ^^

This is not about envy, but about the construction industry and skilled trades surviving the winter. It is unfortunate that this still does not seem to be understood, because without these two sectors, the situation in Germany will look bleak even for top earners in the service industries...

We are still saving despite the fixed-price guarantee and VAT adjustment: the economy needs a bit more than what we can give up 😉

The heating was set to 22.5°C (72.5°F), now it’s at 20.5°C (69°F). Time windows have been reduced. Firewood is being conserved until we receive the increase. The floor is cold, so I’m using a hot water bottle to keep my feet warm.
Ps: At work, the temperature is also limited to 19°C (66°F) 🙁
