Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat unusual question about furniture assembly and hope some of you can help. Specifically, it’s about the Ikea Brimnes series, which is quite popular and versatile but, of course, comes with many screws and fasteners. My question is: "Is it possible to assemble Ikea Brimnes furniture without using screws?"

I don’t just mean skipping some screws here and there, but whether the furniture as a whole can be assembled stably and securely without any screws—perhaps using alternatives like snap-fit joints, dowels, or other methods.

I understand that Ikea furniture is generally designed around the interaction of screws and connectors, but I wonder if there are any exceptions for the Brimnes series or if anyone has practical experience with this.

Thanks in advance for any insights, tips, or advice on potential risks!

Hello nauben5,

you’ve asked an interesting question that is a bit difficult to answer definitively. Basically, Ikea furniture like the Brimnes series is designed so that the necessary screws and fasteners ensure stability. Without screws, many joints simply wouldn’t hold or would become very wobbly.

Alternatives such as wooden dowels or snap-fit systems usually only work with very specific furniture designs—and Brimnes furniture is generally not one of them.

If you want to avoid screws entirely, in my experience a completely different furniture concept would be better suited, for example, pure snap-together furniture or modular kits specifically designed for that purpose.

For Brimnes, I would advise against leaving out screws completely, since doing so would significantly compromise safety and durability. If your concern is just making assembly easier, the screws are usually quite straightforward and quick to install, and Ikea provides the appropriate tools.

I hope this helps you for now!

No, Brimnes cannot be assembled without screws. The structure requires screws; otherwise, the furniture will fall apart.

I can understand your concern. Screws can sometimes be annoying during assembly, especially if you don’t have the right tools or just want to keep things simpler.

From my personal experience: with a Brimnes bed, I actually tried using fewer screws, thinking maybe it would be enough if one part was secure – but after a short time, the whole frame started to wobble, and I had to dismantle it.

I think it also depends on how much weight the furniture needs to support and in which room it is placed. A bookshelf holding books, for example, requires more stability, so a completely screw-free solution is probably unrealistic.

Maybe it would be helpful to know whether you’re planning to replace parts of your Brimnes furniture or just want to see if assembling it without screws is generally possible? That could make a difference in what I would recommend.

That’s a good point. If the goal is to actually create a screw-free construction, a lot of effort would be required, such as custom wooden parts made with a laser cutter or special connectors – Ikea furniture is not designed for that.

There is also the question of long-term stability and whether the furniture would remain secure. Without screws, problems can quickly arise under load or movement, which are inevitable in everyday use.

Therefore, I would clearly say: for Brimnes and similar Ikea series, screws are basically a must – even if sometimes annoying, they ensure everything stays properly fastened and safe.
