Hello everyone, I am planning to install classic IKEA Metod kitchen wall cabinets in my new kitchen, but the walls are completely covered with tiles. My question is: Can IKEA Metod cabinets be mounted directly and securely on tiled walls? I want to avoid the tiles cracking or the mounting failing, as the storage can get quite heavy. Are there any special mounting methods or materials recommended in this case, or would it be better to use a subframe? Thank you very much for your experiences and tips!

My question is: Can IKEA Metod cabinets be mounted directly and securely on tiled walls? In principle, it is possible to mount IKEA Metod cabinets on tiled walls, but it is essential to ensure the quality of the substrate. Tiles themselves do not provide a load-bearing base, so anchors and screws must be firmly fixed in the underlying masonry layers—ideally in concrete or solid brick walls.
Recommendations:
- Always use special tile drill bits to avoid cracking the tiles.
- Use high-quality anchors suitable for tiles and the substrate behind them, such as hollow wall anchors or heavy-duty anchors.
- Check the substrate for stability and tile adhesion.
- Consider professional assistance if unsure.
A supporting frame behind the tiles can also make installation easier and reduce damage, but it is not required if the mounting technique is applied correctly.

But honestly: who really has 100% perfect walls behind the tiles? Especially in older buildings or renovated kitchens, walls are often uneven, porous, or even have loose tiles.
It’s not just a matter of drilling, but also whether the material can actually support the weight.
It gets even more critical if you plan to hang several cabinets or heavy appliances. In that case, I would recommend using an additional wooden framework fixed at multiple sturdy points—this way the weight is distributed and the risk of cracks in the tiles is reduced.
Otherwise, you’ll quickly find yourself hunting for replacement tiles, re-drilling, or changing questionable fixtures.
My conclusion: trusting the tile surface alone is naive.

Can I mount IKEA Metod cabinets directly and securely on tiled walls? In short: Yes, it is possible to attach IKEA Metod wall cabinets directly to a tiled wall—as long as the anchors and screws used are suited to the wall structure.
Here is what I recommend:
- Drill slowly and with minimal pressure using a diamond or carbide tile drill bit,
- then use heavy-duty or chemical anchors,
- if the substrate is not load-bearing or unstable, a mounting plate or wooden framework is advisable,
- test first in an inconspicuous spot to avoid tile damage.
In summary, success depends on the right technique, appropriate materials, and understanding the wall construction.
