Hello everyone,
let’s be honest! When building your dream home, did you make an irreversible, serious mistake by skipping the basement and now regret it? I’m looking for your experiences and reasons why that is, so I don’t make the same mistake myself, as I’m currently deciding whether to build with or without a basement.

We mainly rely on wild fruit and berries as well. The ones we planted ourselves probably need a few more years before they produce a decent yield. The great thing here is that the neighboring village community has planted fruit trees along their field and country roads, where anyone is free to help themselves. A nice touch!

Are you really carrying your scooter down to the basement just to screw something in?! [/QUOTE]
No, I can just ride it in off-road style. My wife gave me a strange look, but she has to deal with it. In winter, she’s even allowed to park it in the granny flat since there’s no flooring installed yet.

Even with a basement, you need a slab foundation – but not a strip footing. It depends on the ground conditions.
We also built with a basement because of the sloped site. Half of the basement is fully exposed, resulting in two rooms plus a bathroom with a total of 40m² (430 sq ft). For me, all the technical equipment and the heating system naturally belong in the basement. A larger storage room also has to be there. In this case, the argument about having space for the children is the most important to me.
I’m not sure if we would build without a basement on flat ground. If the plot is large enough, probably yes. In our area, prices of around 400€/m² (about $43 per sq ft) are common, so you don’t want to use too much of the outdoor area for enclosed buildings. Also, fees tend to rise again due to the increased sealed surface area.
Our basement alone cost us 67,000€ (about $73,000), excluding earthworks and interior finishing, a significant amount. But that also includes the cellar under the garage, which provides an additional 34m² (370 sq ft) of storage space. So, we can do without a garden shed.

Also, taxes and fees increase again due to the larger sealed surface area. Certainly one of the key factors. Here, the cost of developed land starts at around 50€ per square meter (about $5 per square foot). The soil is unremarkable—just remove 30-50cm (12-20 inches) of topsoil and you’re done. Out of more than 80 houses in this development, only one has a basement.
Overall, you need a certain amount of storage space. Whether that is created above or below ground depends on the individual situation.
