We are expecting a visit soon from an American friend of my daughter. However, my daughter wants to keep her small room to herself, so we are considering whether either one of us or the friend could stay in the basement. According to the hygrometer, the humidity level is already near the upper limit, I believe close to 80%. I don’t see any mold. The house is 14 years old. The basement has carpet, a sofa, a foosball table, etc. But I’m not sure if sleeping there for 30 days is okay or could be harmful to health. How can we find out? When you enter the basement, there is a slight musty smell. What do you think?
According to the radon map, our area is not particularly affected.

Somehow horror, right? Does the basement have a window?
As an adult, I probably wouldn’t mind spending two nights in a room like that, but sending a CHILD to the basement is not really appropriate.
From my experience, close friends who are girls are inseparable – and that includes sharing a bed! Maybe clarify the visit details with your daughter... and possibly ask the guest to leave if your daughter feels uncomfortable with the friend?

If the parents decide to sleep in the basement for some time, that might be okay.
But the girl will be shocked for life if she is banished to the basement.
Try again to talk with your daughter, as @ypg has already suggested. If there is no way in, the only option left is banishing the parents to the basement.

@ypg
Maybe I didn’t express myself clearly.
I meant that parents can consciously choose for or against it. However, the girl who comes as a guest would have no choice. It would be the shock of her life if she had to go to the basement. (Just imagine—a girl of 12 or 14 years old: “Hi, glad you’re here. We’re very happy. Oh, by the way—there’s the door to the basement—that’s where you’ll be sleeping for the time being. Welcome!”)
But there are also parents who, out of love for their child, voluntarily choose the exile to the basement.
