Hello everyone,
let’s be honest! When building your dream home, did you make an irreversible, serious mistake by skipping the basement and now regret it? I’m looking for your experiences and reasons why that is, so I don’t make the same mistake myself, as I’m currently deciding whether to build with or without a basement.

For us, it was a must-have, also in terms of the desired room layout – never without one.

Baujulchen14 Oct 2015 06:07We built without a basement 20 years ago and are planning to do the same for the new house. Back then, it was due to budget constraints; this time, it’s because we genuinely believe we don’t need one. However, we will not do without a crawl space (for suitcases and such), even though my ideal house would actually have a flat roof.
A good friend once told me, "If you already have to come up with reasons not to build a basement, then just build a basement!"
Honestly, I don’t understand this argument about clutter at all. A tendency to hoard? We currently have a basement where we only do laundry, and my husband has his hobby workshop. Garden furniture is stored there over the winter, and the cat litter box is kept there too. Even this basement is perfectly tidy, with no items lying around unused or creating clutter. In the new house, we don’t want to give up this huge amount of space; we plan to expand it to include a large office and a big music room. The basement will also be fully equipped technically, with underfloor heating and more. I am really looking forward to it!
Oh, there will also be a crawl space under the roof and a storage room in the garage. But for me, neither of those replaces a basement!!
