Hello everyone,
let’s be honest! When building your dream home, did you make an irreversible, serious mistake by skipping the basement and now regret it? I’m looking for your experiences and reasons why that is, so I don’t make the same mistake myself, as I’m currently deciding whether to build with or without a basement.

& it’s still enough for my home theater in the attic.

Just imagine the same room a) in the basement and b) in the attic: which feels better?

Best regards, Yvonne

There’s no need to discuss that! But an extra €60,000 (about $65,000) for a better experience? With that money, I could invite my entire family to every premiere of a new movie for life—and still have enough left for the occasional pack of popcorn.

No worries... for me, it always feels better to be under the roof than underground.

Ah, that’s what you meant! Yes, you’re absolutely right, having natural sunlight above ground is definitely better... But for the perfect home theater, you need a truly dark room, and sloped ceilings do limit the design options a bit. BUT better to have a fulfilled dream with compromises than a dream that never comes true, right?

The attic with a standard staircase and concrete slab, as well as the garage, will be built with my father-in-law, who is a professional in this field! I estimate the garage will cost around €20,000.
If we had planned for a basement, a double garage would still be a "must" for us. That’s why we’re making it a bit larger now, but overall we still save quite a bit.

If you make them yourself, you can calculate much less – I have almost the same size.
