Watcher7818 Sep 2015 16:39Hello everyone.
We are considering building a two-story house. Currently, we have planned a knee wall of 2.20 meters (7 feet 3 inches). However, we were told that with this knee wall height on the eaves side, it is not possible to install a large window including a roller shutter. At the same time, there is another thread where also a 2.20 meter (7 feet 3 inches) knee wall is planned, but according to the original poster, standard windows including roller shutters are installed there. That surprised me a bit.
In my opinion, only a window up to 1.60 meters (5 feet 3 inches) can be installed without a roller shutter, since the box for the shutter of about 30 centimeters (12 inches) plus insulation and the finished floor still have to be deducted.
Can someone tell me what the minimum knee wall height must be to install a large window including a roller shutter? Has anyone built like this before?
Thank you very much in advance for your help.

What size do you consider normal? In our upper floor, we have a ceiling height of 250 cm (98 inches) from the finished floor level, and the windows include roller shutters. The lintel of the rough opening is about 245 cm (96 inches), and the finished window frame height is 220 cm (87 inches).
Now you need to consider what your requirements for a window are. I find this height comfortable; anything lower might feel inconvenient to me.
Alternatively, you could omit the roller shutters.

Watcher7818 Sep 2015 22:20Ok, to put it differently, how high does the upper floor need to be in order to install large windows with shutters? 2.50 - 2.60 m (8 ft 2 in - 8 ft 6 in)?
It probably refers to the knee wall side, not the gable end. Basically, it’s more a question of how high the knee wall will be 🙂 Of course, it’s true that on the lower side, you won’t be able to fit very tall windows. However, keep in mind that with a standard knee wall, only roof windows are usually possible. Either a proper town villa design, raising the knee wall, smaller windows, or no external shutters on these windows would be options.

Watcher7820 Sep 2015 17:48We visited the model home park in Frechen today. There were houses with a 40cm (16 inches) tall window installed on the upper floor at about 100 meters (330 feet) height, including a roller shutter. This is how we imagine it for our home.
