Hello,

due to our building plans for our angled bungalow, we are planning a garage measuring 6x9 meters (20x30 feet), but we tend to position the garage about 2 meters (6.5 feet) away from the house rather than directly attached.

On the opposite side at the same level, to the left of the bungalow, there are guest rooms, a utility room, and a living room.

We just wanted to gather some opinions on this garage situation. So, we are leaning towards not attaching the garage to the house, but rather placing it about 2 meters (6.5 feet) apart.

How have you handled the garage placement in your projects?

But 6 x 9 meters (20 x 30 feet) should be enough for two cars, right?

Yes, don’t let yourself get stressed out. Nowadays, when garages sometimes seem to be more important than the house itself, even dimensions like that are often questioned. It won’t be spacious, but it will be enough for two cars plus some additional storage space.

9 m (30 ft) is long enough for trash bins, bicycles, and shelves. A 6 m (20 ft) width is not wide enough to fully open car doors or to walk through with bicycles in between, especially with children. It is roughly the same space as two parking spaces side by side. Cars fit inside. A wider space is more comfortable.

The garage door is nice, but not essential. Although this door is the one we use most often. Even friends go through the garage. My husband said that for the next house, the front door will just be painted on. It serves the purpose.

Fire safety regulations can be a factor. Here, garages are located relatively close to the house, about 2 meters (6.5 feet) away.

Thank you. We will have the garage built 2 meters (6.6 feet) to the left of the house.
We don’t like it directly attached to the house.

And which comment exactly influenced your decision? I couldn’t identify any.

There was a request for the site plan and house location. From that, something could have been inferred or decided, but as it stands?
Some want to be able to walk through the gap between garage and house, for example to the garden or terrace; others want direct access from the house to the garage. For that, the floor plan needs to fit…

Are these measurements width or depth? Internal or external dimensions? How big are the cars, and what else needs to be stored (bicycles, tools, trailer, recyclables sorted into 10 categories, etc.)? How much space do you need for getting in and out?

Just to add, garages also have wall thickness. Is the 6 meters (20 feet) the internal dimension?
Therefore, "or" could very well be the right answer – for example, 5.27 meters (17.3 feet) – and it significantly depends on the door(s) situation and parking arrangement (front-to-front, rear-to-front, or rear-to-rear)…
