I have recently met with several landscapers for quotes, and each one told me something different. Therefore, my question is: Which type of dimpled membrane should I use on the house wall before backfilling with topsoil or similar material? Should it be with or without a fleece layer? One landscaper said that a membrane without fleece is no longer allowed.

Also, how should the membrane be installed: the dimples facing the wall or the smooth side against the wall?

At first, I thought this question might be embarrassing to ask, but since I’ve received so many different answers, it seems there is some confusion here.

What do you think?

99% use it without a membrane, but I believe using one would be better. The studs should definitely face towards the house side, as this allows ventilation and helps any water to drain more effectively.

For the foil with fleece, do we also install the smooth side, which is covered with fleece, on the outside?

Is the wall plastered or faced with brick cladding?

The damp proof membrane is not waterproofing.
For brick cladding, first apply two layers of sealing slurry or a two-component bitumen thick coating. Also consider the primary waterproofing and its height between the wall layers.

The damp proof membrane should have the fleece facing the wall and the studs away from the wall, towards the soil side.

Seal the top edge with a capping strip to prevent rainwater from running in from above. The fleece on the side protects the waterproofing layer from damage such as abrasion marks.

Having the studs against the wall only makes sense if the wall is meant to be ventilated. If there is no drainage at the bottom, moisture will accumulate. Using a capping strip then interferes with ventilation again.

The wall is already coated with a waterproof slurry, but the height is not yet sufficient. Another layer needs to be applied. From the basement side, a dimple membrane with fleece backing has already been installed. However, it no longer extends above the fill or compaction level. Therefore, when landscaping the garden, we will need to add about 40-50cm (16-20 inches) of dimple membrane.

Hello,
try googling "How to protect buildings against groundwater and seepage water?" You will find general information about drainage!
