I have a Billy shelf from IKEA at home and I’m wondering how often proper furniture maintenance should be done to keep it in good condition over the long term.
I mainly use the shelf for books and some decorative items. I’m not just asking about occasional dusting, but more detailed care: which cleaning products are suitable, how often should it be wiped with a damp cloth, are there special care products for the surfaces, and is any special treatment needed to prevent scratches or minor damage?
I’m also interested in whether maintenance should be adjusted depending on the location (e.g., near a window or in a rather dry room).
Thanks for your tips!

Hello aurelianch,
First of all, your question is well thought out and makes a lot of sense. The BILLY shelves are made of coated particleboard, which means they are relatively easy to maintain but still require some care.
In general, wiping the shelf with a dry or slightly damp cloth about once a month is sufficient to remove dust. This is enough for most rooms, assuming normal dust accumulation.
If your shelf is placed in a more exposed area (for example, near a window where moisture from condensation or UV light might be an issue), it’s advisable to check and clean it approximately every two weeks.
Regarding cleaning products: it’s best to avoid harsh chemicals and instead use neutral cleaners or special furniture cleaners designed for coated surfaces.
You can’t completely avoid scratches, especially on an affordable piece of furniture like the BILLY, but minor touch-ups with special repair markers available at hardware stores are possible.
If you like, I can also provide some specific product recommendations.

Additional information:
The BILLY shelving unit is made of melamine-coated particleboard, which is easy to maintain but remains susceptible to moisture and physical damage.
Monthly surface care is recommended; regularly dusting with a microfiber cloth helps prevent dust buildup, which can dull the surface over time.
Damp cleaning should only be done when absolutely necessary. Use a well-wrung, damp cloth—a wet cloth can damage the material. Afterward, the surface should be wiped dry with a dry cloth.
Harsh, solvent-based cleaners are unsuitable, as they can damage or dull the coating.
The use of special furniture care products for coated surfaces is optional, as they offer minimal additional protection. When in doubt, neutral, pH-balanced cleaners are preferable.
Depending on the location: Especially with direct sunlight or high humidity, more frequent checks are advisable, as UV light can cause discoloration and moisture can lead to swelling.

I would like to share my experience, as I have been using the BILLY shelf for years and take good care of it.
I usually take time every 4 weeks to dust everything off and then wipe it down lightly with a damp cloth. I use a mild dish soap in warm water, which works well.
Sometimes I worry about the small scratches that eventually appear – but I think that’s just part of having a wooden piece of furniture that is actively used.
I also find that the indoor air quality makes a big difference. In our rather dry room, dust and temperature have a strong effect on the material. The shelf tends to feel a bit more brittle there.
Still, with regular care, it feels sturdy. 🙂
