Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought a Billy bookshelf from IKEA, but I noticed that the doors I installed are slightly warped. This mainly shows because they don’t close properly and look uneven in some areas.

My question is: What is the best way to straighten these warped doors?

I have considered whether treating them with heat might help or if simply adjusting the hinges would be enough, but I’m concerned that I might cause more damage. Perhaps someone has knowledge of material properties or experience with similar cases.

I would appreciate any tips, especially on how to avoid damaging the surface and what should definitely be avoided.

Good morning!

A quick update on my idea with the steaming towel: I tried it myself, but only for a very slight bending. In your case, with 3-4 mm (0.1-0.15 inches), I would also advise against it – the material would be too much affected.

A small tip on the side: If the shelf is placed in a more humid location, the humidity could worsen the problem. You can also take this into account when straightening; it’s best to work in a dry environment.

If you are considering a replacement: IKEA usually offers spare parts. The doors can often be reordered easily. This is almost the best solution if the doors are severely warped.

Thank you for all the helpful contributions!

Today, I will remove the doors, lay them flat on an even surface, and weigh them down. I will completely loosen the hinges before reinstalling and then readjust them.

If this does not lead to sufficient improvement, replacing the doors seems to be the most reasonable step, as a 3-4 mm (0.1-0.16 inches) warp does not sound like something that will stay straight in the long term.

I have also noted the advice regarding humidity, as the system is located in the basement, which probably explains the issue.

I will provide an update once I have tried these measures.
