Hello everyone, I am planning to mount a Billy bookcase from IKEA on the wall soon and want to make sure everything is done correctly so that it is safe and no damage occurs. What are the most important steps, and what should I pay special attention to during installation? I have heard that choosing the right wall anchors, measuring accurately, and adhering to weight limits are crucial. Is there a practical checklist or experience you can share regarding the proper installation of the Billy bookcase? I look forward to specific tips and recommendations!

Important: Check the load-bearing capacity of the wall, choose anchors suitable for the wall type, and use a spirit level. This way, you should not have any problems.

The often recommended checklist is not universal, as it does not sufficiently differentiate between wall types and load scenarios.

1. Determine wall type (drywall, concrete, brick)

This is correct, but I am skeptical about the load ratings on the packaging. They are usually intended for statically vertical loaded shelves, not for dynamic loads such as heavy leaning or pushing.

My advice: If the shelf is valuable or intended to hold heavy items, plan together with a structural engineer or skilled tradesperson.

Hey Biron, don’t worry – with some patience and a bit of thinking, it will work out really well. 🙂 Doing a load test with light books is also a good idea before you fully load the shelf.

Sometimes a little “knocking” on the wall helps

Wall knocking is basically the DIY method to detect good mounting spots! That and a spirit level are my secret weapons. 😉

For installation:
1. Carefully mark the drill holes
2. Use appropriate wall plugs
3. Drill the hole, insert the wall plug
4. Screw in the screws
5. Hang the shelf

This will prevent the shelf from falling down.

Thank you for all the contributions! Does anyone have experience with positioning in corners or installing multiple shelves side by side? I ask because I want to assemble the shelves so they are securely connected and don’t stand as separate units. Are there any special tips for wall mounting or connecting the shelves to each other?
