does anyone have good experience with installing corner stones?
I'm unsure about the backfilling:
the stones are being installed without drainage, so is it necessary or advisable to backfill with gravel anyway?
My understanding is that this would allow water to seep down, but then not drain well since there is no drainage system.
Wouldn't it be more sensible to backfill directly with soil in this case?
Best regards

However, that has nothing to do with proper drainage. If water doesn’t infiltrate well or at all in your area, you need a plan, because the water must go somewhere. Either you have an open water management system and create suitable trenches or swales, or you have a closed water management system and install a drainage system. There is no middle ground.
Of course, you can also do nothing and just backfill. In that case, I kindly ask you to post pictures of your new "pool" here after the next heavy rain. 😎

The plan now is to seal the joints between the stones not with bitumen, but with a sandbox fleece.
If there is really heavy rain, the water that does not drain into the ground can flow away.

Technically speaking, this shouldn't cause any water to accumulate, right?
Would you still fill in with gravel behind it?
I'm a bit unsure about this.
