Hello everyone, I am currently looking into whether there are pragmatic and practical ways to expand or modularize IKEA Hemnes shelves. I already own a Hemnes shelf and am considering enlarging it either in width or height without having to buy completely new units or switch to a different series. I am especially interested in options that remain structurally stable and preserve the appearance—such as additional side panels, matching extension sets, or alternative solutions using compatible components from the IKEA range or third-party suppliers. Does anyone know of specific options, experiences, or tips on how Hemnes shelves can be effectively extended to adapt them individually to changing space and storage needs?
I can understand well how important a flexible extension is to you. It was similar for me, and I ended up experimenting with suitable add-on parts from IKEA accessories, which can also be used for other furniture—such as back panels or additional shelves to optimize storage space. Expanding a whole unit has so far been a manual balance between stability and appearance for me. Overall, the topic is quite thought-provoking because, although Hemnes scores well on quality, it remains somewhat inflexible when it comes to modules. Do you already have specific building plans?
