Hello everyone,

Lately, I have been wondering whether there are actually regional differences regarding quality issues with IKEA’s Billy shelves. I’ve noticed that the reports I often read come from various parts of Germany and describe very different problems – ranging from wobbly shelves to surfaces peeling off.

I’m interested in your views: Have you personally or through your network experienced anything that suggests some regions might be affected differently or more severely by quality problems with Billy?

Specifically, I’m thinking about whether this could be related to different production batches, varying transport routes, or regional storage conditions.

I look forward to your informed opinions and experiences so we can better understand the situation.

Briefly: Engineered wood products like MDF react to moisture by swelling and warping. This can vary regionally, for example, if the humidity levels in storage areas differ.

Practically speaking, if a Billy shelf is stored for several weeks in a damp room before sale, the likelihood of quality issues increases.

A study in the field of furniture manufacturing shows that, in addition to storage humidity, temperature during transport and storage is also crucial. Higher temperatures can cause stresses in the material, thereby reducing durability.

These factors combined could lead to regional differences.

A practical tip: Anyone noticing many complaints in a specific region should ask IKEA whether the products come from different production batches or warehouses. The causes are often found there.

Super interesting topic here!

I recently assembled a similar Billy shelf for friends in Hamburg, and although the instructions almost replace the need for programming code, the shelf was stable and looks great! 🙂

Maybe the quality issues are simply a matter of how the shelf is set up and used?

Personally, I haven’t seen any problems so far, but that can vary with every brand.

Don’t get discouraged, Billy remains a great product! 😊

if there are any literature references within the community on how MDF or particle boards behave in different climate zones

Here is a brief tip: The DIN EN 312 standard specifies requirements for particle boards. For furniture-grade particle boards, it also defines classes that specify water absorption and stability.

Basically, the higher the class, the more resistant the wood-based panel product is to moisture.

The Billy material is standard furniture-grade particle board and is manufactured accordingly. It is not adapted to regional climatic conditions, which could explain the observed differences.

Additionally, I would like to point out that with mass-produced items like the Billy bookshelf, there can be variations between individual production batches. These are usually minor and generally not critical, but they can become more noticeable depending on regional storage conditions.

Furthermore, different warehouse environments at various retailers, where shelves may remain unopened for extended periods, can also affect quality changes. These factors should be considered when addressing the question, “Are there regional differences in Billy quality issues?”

I completely agree, even though we discuss a lot of problems here – they are not comparable to the number of satisfied customers!

Maybe a project: Everyone who writes here checks their Billy, writes a short review, and then we see if there are regional patterns? That would be exciting and would strengthen this community!

I’m in! 🙂
