DupichenHello everyone, I have several pieces of furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series in my apartment, mainly dressers and nightstands. I’ve noticed that when opening and closing the drawers, they sometimes creak or rattle quite a bit, which can be quite annoying, especially in quiet moments or at night. That’s why I wanted to ask if anyone has practical tips or experience on how to make Hemnes furniture quieter? I have considered lubricating the drawer slides or adjusting the drawers a bit, but I’d prefer to avoid damaging the furniture or affecting its appearance. Are there any tricks using glide pads, felt pads, or other materials that I could use? I’d really appreciate it if you could share your experiences!
I can fully understand how annoying squeaky furniture can be—especially when it disturbs us during daily activities or while relaxing in the evening.
That sounds like a good idea. For me, it also helped to remove the drawers and lightly treat all wooden surfaces with wax – this improves the sliding properties and reduces noise. However, I was initially unsure whether the wax might leave dark stains, so proceed carefully and test first!
Maybe it’s comforting to know that woods like those used in Hemnes furniture often have some give, and small noises are part of their “charm.” Still, there are ways to make the furniture a bit more relaxed and quieter.

If I were you, I would apply felt or foam strips to the contact points of the drawers.

I have considered oiling the drawer slides or adjusting the drawers a bit, I think this is generally a sensible idea, but there are limits to what can be achieved here: If the furniture’s mechanical system consists of wooden or basic drawer slides, oils or lubricants won’t eliminate the fundamental creaking. Instead, it’s worth checking whether the noise also comes from contact between wooden surfaces.
A very precise adjustment of the drawers is often underestimated, as even a slightly misaligned fit can be the cause.
My systematic recommendation:
- Completely remove the drawers and clean the sliding surfaces
- Light sanding or material removal on visible edges that cause noise
- Apply thin felt strips at contact points
This approach can already lead to noticeably quieter operation.
Great topic! I had the same issue with Hemnes dressers, and let me tell you: felt pads are a gamechanger!! 😃 Just stick them on the sides of the drawers where the wood rubs against wood, and the squeaking disappears!
I also experimented a bit with silicone oil on the tracks, but felt strips gave me the best results. Plus: they’re very affordable and you can easily replace the strips if they get dirty. Definitely give this a try, it’s totally worth it!

I completely understand the issue; noises coming from furniture can really affect daily life, especially when heard at night or during quiet moments.
From my own experience with wooden and Ikea furniture, creaking is often caused by a combination of material stress and minor inaccuracies during assembly. It usually helps to remove the drawers completely, tighten all screws, and carefully smooth the wooden edges with very fine sandpaper.
I agree with this, as they significantly reduce friction and noise.
Patience is key here – furniture can start to creak over time, but with some attention, you can effectively manage the noise level.
