Hello everyone, I currently have several Malm furniture pieces from Ikea and want to securely mount them to the wall to prevent tipping accidents. Unfortunately, the supplied fixing materials and instructions are often quite general and not very robust, especially when there are small children in the household or the furniture is frequently loaded.

Are there any tips or proven methods here in the forum for firmly and permanently securing Malm furniture? Which wall anchors work best for different wall types (e.g., concrete, drywall, brick)? Does anyone use alternative brackets or supplement the Ikea fittings with other methods?

Thank you in advance for your recommendations!

Hello Teresa52,

First of all, it’s good that you take furniture safety seriously. Malm furniture is stable when assembled correctly, but the standard brackets and fasteners from IKEA are often designed only for standard walls and may fail on porous surfaces.

I always recommend starting by carefully checking the wall type: is it concrete, solid brick, or drywall? For concrete or brick walls, high-quality anchors and appropriate screws (at least 6 mm diameter) are suitable—preferably hammer anchors or cage nuts if accessible. For drywall, special metal anchors or hollow wall anchors are recommended—avoid cheap plastic anchors.

Additionally, it helps to secure the furniture not only with the standard fasteners but also by attaching stronger metal brackets on the back and fixing these to the wall. If the furniture will bear particular loads, you can also increase stability inside the piece by screwing in extra reinforcement rails.

If possible, screw the brackets directly into the studs or beams behind the drywall—that is best. Otherwise, use reliable hollow wall anchors with high load capacity. Good luck!

Hello, always choose wall plugs appropriate for the wall material and use the supplied metal bracket for wall mounting. For drywall, I recommend metal anchors; for concrete, impact anchors. Screw in deep enough to ensure the furniture is securely mounted.

For the secure installation of Malm furniture, I recommend a combination of the following measures:

1. Identify the wall type: reinforced concrete, solid brick, or drywall. This determines the choice of fastening materials.

2. For concrete or brick walls: use hammer anchors with screws at least 6 mm (1/4 inch) in diameter. These provide the necessary load-bearing capacity.

3. For drywall: ideally, fasten directly into the drywall studs. If this is not possible, use only tested hollow wall anchors with high load capacity, such as metal hollow wall anchors.

4. Ikea wall fittings (metal brackets with straps) should be supplemented with stronger brackets and, if necessary, additional screws.

5. Ensure correct positioning of the brackets: preferably above the drawer area and at the top edge to minimize tipping forces.

6. After assembly, check stability by gently rocking the furniture and tightening the screws.

Following these steps significantly reduces the risk of accidents with Malm furniture.

I would like to add to the tips from Maria35:

Pay attention to the correct positioning of the brackets: ideally above the drawer area and at the top edge to minimize tipping forces.

That is an important point. Additionally, if your Malm furniture has multiple drawers, the attachment should be secured both at the top and in the middle to prevent rotation.

For small children, an anti-tip strap can be used, which prevents tipping even with some movement allowance. These straps are equipped with strong bands and can be firmly screwed to both the wall and the furniture.

Another safety measure is to avoid placing heavy loads in the upper drawers to improve the center of gravity.
