which orientation is “better”? Of course, the house will be positioned further back than shown in the sketch, as it makes the most sense to plan the garden between the house and the street facing south.

I think both options have pros and cons.

One garage at the back

Get proper plans (geoportal, local authority website) and post everything again with more background information (house size, etc., see the "questionnaire in the forum").

For me, it is only about whether it is better for the garage to be oriented toward NW or SE.

You need to decide that for yourself... In the east the sun rises, then it moves southward toward the west. Does the garage block a room to the southeast where you actually want sunlight? I would place the garage on the north side, but that is more a matter of personal preference, including considerations like access and so on.

From which direction do you access the plot? Is it possible along the entire length of the street? Where is the main entrance supposed to be? A bit more information would be helpful. Without knowing more, I would prefer the option of a garage in the northwest.
