Hello everyone,

After cleaning for spring, I unfortunately ended up with some light new streaks on my white KALLAX shelf unit. They appear to be surface-level but cannot be easily wiped away. The streaks look like scratches or possibly residue from cleaning cloths or cleaning products.

Does anyone have experience with the best way to clean white KALLAX shelves without damaging the surface? Are there any specific cleaning agents or techniques to target these streaks? I prefer not to use anything too harsh, as I want to keep the shelf in good condition without causing further damage.

Looking forward to any helpful tips and advice!

The best way is to clean it with a damp microfiber cloth and some dish soap, then dry it immediately.

Thanks, I tried that first, but unfortunately without success. The streaks didn’t come off and seemed more superficial than baked-in.

Try gently rubbing it with an eraser

The eraser idea sounds interesting! I’ve never tried that on furniture before. Has anyone here used this method often on white furniture? Is there a specific type of eraser needed, or is a regular school eraser enough?

Wipe over it with diluted vinegar water

That’s a good tip, I’ll test it carefully since it seems low risk. Is there any risk of damage from vinegar to the white KALLAX surface? I mean, it’s coated, right, or could it cause discoloration?

I once had similar streaks on my white KALLAX. A regular school eraser worked well for me—I was very careful and tested it in small areas. No visible damage afterward.

Vinegar is generally fine as long as it is diluted and not left to sit. With KALLAX featuring a melamine coating, there is little risk, but always wipe again immediately with clear water afterward.

I recommend the classic white erasers, as they don’t abrade the surface too much. Test it first on an inconspicuous spot!

And if the streaks are from plastic residue: sometimes nail polish remover with acetone can help – use it very sparingly and wipe off quickly. But only as a last resort and always test beforehand!

Thank you, I will try that very carefully because I suspect it might actually be such residues. I will report back on how it goes. Thanks for the helpful tips so far!
