Hello everyone,
I am facing the challenge of assembling an IKEA Malm piece of furniture, but I only have a very limited range of tools available. Specifically, I have just a Phillips screwdriver, a small hammer, and a combination pliers. No cordless drill, no spirit level, or special assembly materials.
My question is: How can I assemble the Malm furniture as efficiently and safely as possible with such limited tools? Are there any tricks or aids that can make the assembly easier, to avoid damaging parts or compromising the stability of the furniture?
I am generally not unskilled with DIY tasks, but the IKEA instructions are always very concise, and some steps seem difficult without the right tools.
I would be very grateful for helpful tips, personal experiences, or specific recommendations!

How can I assemble the Malm furniture as efficiently and safely as possible with such limited tools? The Malm frame is basically designed to be assembled with simple tools. It is important to follow the instructions carefully and, above all, to insert the wooden dowels correctly.
If you don’t have a cordless screwdriver, it is advisable to extend the handle of the Phillips screwdriver (a piece of round wood or a thick cardboard tube works well here) to gain more leverage and make it easier to screw in the screws.
A small hammer helps to gently tap in the dowels. However, be careful not to apply too much force to avoid damaging the material.
Another tip: sort all parts before assembly and double-check that everything is complete. This will prevent frustration later on and avoid incorrect assembly.
With these steps, you can complete the assembly successfully even without specialized tools.
Good morning,
I would like to add a supplementary tip for assembling Malm furniture with limited tools: it is advisable to start screwing the screws in carefully by hand. This way, you can ensure they are aligned properly and avoid damaging the threads in the pre-drilled holes.
Here is an alternative: if you don’t have a suitable extension handle, you can support the turning motion with a wrench (if you have one) by gripping the screwdriver with pliers and applying more force. But be careful to keep the angle right to avoid damaging the screw head profile.
Regarding stability: pay close attention to precisely fitting the parts at the joints to prevent the furniture from wobbling later on. Sometimes it helps to slightly pull the components apart and then fit them together again.
Finally, a tip: work on a level surface to improve accuracy during assembly.
Good luck!

Hello,
I just wanted to add that when you have limited tools, patience also plays a big role. Malm furniture can definitely be assembled without a cordless screwdriver, although it takes a bit more time.
This reduces the risk of creating crooked screw holes, especially when the screws go into particleboard. Also, if a screw doesn’t turn easily, never force it. Instead, pull the screwdriver out briefly and reposition it.
One more tip: find someone to help hold the parts while you screw. An awkward piece of furniture can easily slip if you’re working alone on the screws.
If you find you really lack the right tools, see if you can borrow a cordless screwdriver or at least a good ratcheting screwdriver for a low cost. These make assembly much easier.
Otherwise, good luck with the build 🙂

If you realize that you really lack tools, see if you can find an affordable rental option for a cordless screwdriver or at least a good ratcheting screwdriver. This is an important point I fully agree with. Especially for larger furniture pieces like the Malm, investing in a ratcheting tool or renting a cordless screwdriver is worthwhile both in terms of time and physical effort.
In case no other screwdriver is available, I also recommend applying a drop of lubricant (e.g., a little cooking oil) to the screws, which significantly reduces friction when screwing them in.
Another tip is to sort all the screws before assembly and have the matching screwdriver bits ready. This makes the work easier and avoids unnecessary waiting times.
In summary: With patient work, smart use of the available tools, and considering renting tools if needed, assembling the Malm is well manageable even with limited equipment.
