Hello everyone,

I have a problem with an Ikea Billy shelf: the back panel is quite badly torn at one corner, causing the shelf to be unstable and wobbly. My question is: what can I do if the back panel of a Billy shelf is torn? Is there a practical way to repair it or restore stability in another way without having to buy a completely new shelf? Does anyone have experience with this or tips on suitable materials or methods? Thanks in advance!

Reinforce the back panel from the inside with a thin plywood or multiplex board

I agree with that. The best results are achieved with multiplex boards because they are more stable and less prone to warping than hardboard panels.

Before screwing, it is advisable to pre-drill holes to prevent the material from splitting. You should also ensure that the screws have a solid grip in the side panels.

This way, the shelf remains stable over the long term. A neat finish is also important for the appearance, especially if the shelf is visible from the back or accessible from the inside.

A crack in the back panel is not uncommon with Billy. Either use wood glue or replace the back panel. Insert a reinforcement made of thin plywood and screw it in. This will make the shelf sturdy again.

Remove the back panel, glue the crack with wood glue, and secure it. Additionally, screw a thin wooden board from the inside. This will keep the shelf stable.

Very useful tip! I just wanted to add: if you don’t have the right screws, small nails can also work – they often hold just as well on thin panels. The important thing is to be careful during assembly to avoid causing any damage.

On the topic of patience: my shelf only became fully stable after two days, once the glue had completely dried. So it’s best to take your time.

If anyone has questions about the exact procedure, I’m happy to put together a brief guide.

This is really important! I often see people using their furniture too soon and then being surprised by a lack of stability. If the back panel is cracked and you fasten it with screws before the glue is fully cured, it won’t hold.

One more tip: If you notice a large crack during the repair, you can use a waterproof (PU) wood glue variant to help prevent moisture damage. This can be especially relevant in rental apartments.

I hope your repair goes well!
