Hello everyone,

I am currently considering how to retrofit IKEA Hemnes series furniture with LED lighting. I am interested in both practical and technical aspects: What solutions are available to integrate lighting discreetly and without visible cables? What is the best way to attach LED strips or lights to the often solid wooden parts? And most importantly: How can everything be safely and functionally connected without limiting the furniture’s usability?

My focus is on a solution that is as elegant as possible but also feasible from a craftsmanship perspective, without requiring extensive effort for modification or power supply. Are there any recommendations for specific LED systems, controllers, or mounting methods that are particularly suitable for Hemnes furniture?

Looking forward to your experiences and tips!

For retrofitting LED lighting in Hemnes furniture, I recommend the following:

- Use self-adhesive LED strips with a low profile, about 8 mm (0.3 inches) wide, ideally operating at 12V or 24V to minimize heat generation.
- Attach the strips on the inside of shelves or under edges, where they can be easily fixed with clips or tape.
- Hide cables inside the furniture along existing joints or behind false backs, as Hemnes furniture often has hollow spaces.
- Power the LEDs with a small power supply unit, preferably placed externally, with cables routed through the backs.
- Optionally, you can integrate a 12V dimmer or a motion sensor for added convenience.

It is important to carefully measure the areas to be lit beforehand to cut the LED strips to the correct length. Hemnes furniture does not have dedicated channels for cables, so a careful installation is advisable to avoid visible damage.

That hits the nail on the head. I would add that thermal management should also be considered during installation. LED strips should be mounted on aluminum profiles to better dissipate heat and extend their lifespan. Hemnes furniture often allows for adjustment on the back panels to invisibly accommodate a slim aluminum profile.

It’s advisable to use rubber grommets at cable pass-throughs in the back panels to prevent damage to the wires. Another tip: route the connection cables outside the furniture in cable channels along the wall to reduce the risk of injury and tripping hazards.

If you plan to upgrade the control system, digital controllers with remote control can be integrated, as long as the power supply is stable and the LEDs are dimmable.

I’m curious about your planned power source and how flexibly the furniture can be positioned on the intended partition wall. This directly affects wiring and accessibility.

However, one should critically consider whether such "smart" gimmicks are really necessary for simple furniture like Hemnes. The clean design thrives precisely on simplicity and clarity, doesn’t it?

Why not just use warm white LED strips operated by a simple on/off switch? Often things are overcomplicated, while simple lighting is perfectly sufficient to create a cozy atmosphere for the furniture.

Furthermore, the Hemnes series is known for being quite robust and heavy pieces that are often rearranged. How practical is a permanently installed tangle of cables in that case?

I would rather recommend modular solutions that remain flexible and don’t require complicated installation. And if the power supply remains visible at the back, that doesn’t necessarily clash with the overall look.
