bartunahan7 Aug 2017 19:23Hello everyone, I would like to start a discussion on the topic: “Which colors work particularly well with Ikea Besta in a modern living style?” I am especially interested in which shades or combinations best complement the typical BESTA modules and their simple, streamlined design to create a modern, even minimalist look. I am less concerned with wood tones or existing surfaces and more focused on wall colors, accent colors for accessories, or even rugs and upholstery that harmonize well with BESTA. Does anyone have experience or specific tips? And which color accents feel fresh without overwhelming the sense of space? Thanks in advance for your opinions!
A very interesting topic! For Ikea BESTA in a modern living style, I especially recommend sticking to a clear color palette, as the BESTA system is quite versatile but really shines with simplified colors. For example:
- White and shades of gray as base colors for walls help support a minimalist and airy atmosphere.
- Accent colors like teal, ochre, or a muted mustard enhance the modern character without appearing too bold.
- Anthracite or black provide nice contrasts, for instance, in handles or decorations.
Many people forget that lighting also strongly influences color perception – warm white light softens colors slightly, while cool light emphasizes cooler tones.
I would be interested to know the size and brightness of the room where the BESTA will be placed, as room dimensions and lighting have a significant impact on how colors appear and which combinations are advisable.

I think it’s worth questioning how timeless the choice of color really is. Often, when selecting furniture from Ikea, people tend to choose quite neutral tones out of fear of it becoming outdated. However, especially in modern interior styles, deliberate and bold colors can be very attractive and contemporary. Instead of limiting yourself to just beige or gray, using a clear dark blue or moss green can create interesting accents and give the space an unexpected depth.
I agree, but I would use black more selectively, for example only on small details, as it can otherwise feel overwhelming. It’s important to coordinate the color choice with the light source and existing furnishings. Without this information, general recommendations are difficult to make.

Hey everyone! I love the topic of colors and think you can be really creative with Ikea BESTA! =) I’m especially impressed by combinations with warm wood tones and fresh colors – mint green or a soft sky blue, for example, go really well with white or black BESTA units and bring a lovely lightness to the room.
For me, the general rule is: don’t be afraid to add some color – it definitely won’t be boring! And modern doesn’t have to mean bare and sterile, so just try it out and see what you enjoy the most!

Thank you very much for the tips so far. I would like to add:
- White remains the safest choice for the walls to make BESTA stand out.
- Accent colors in light gray or blue.
- For those who are more adventurous, teal is an option.
Colors should generally be cooler to maintain the modern look.

I like to mix IKEA BESTA with a warm orange or coral – it instantly gives the room a cheerful touch without making it feel cluttered. Pair that with neutral walls, maybe a very light cream, and everything feels harmonious and modern.
Oh, and another tip: using textiles in matching colors can keep things really flexible if you ever want to change your mind!
