Hello everyone,

I am considering how to modify my IKEA Malm furniture relatively easily, without requiring advanced tools skills or investing too much time. Specifically, I would like to visually customize the dressers, maybe reorganize some drawers or repurpose them for a different use. I am especially interested in which simple modifications are technically feasible, what additional materials are needed, and what should be carefully considered if you don’t have woodworking experience. Are there proven tips or steps that beginners should definitely not overlook? I look forward to practical advice that helps to personalize Malm furniture in an affordable and effective way.

Hello bumumin,

I can help you with some clear steps on how to easily modify your Malm furniture. Basically, I recommend first planning exactly what function your furniture pieces should have after the modification. Then, measure each component carefully – be precise here to ensure the changes fit perfectly.

A typical and simple modification that doesn’t require advanced carpentry skills is adding extra shelves or replacing the handles for a different design. If you want to reorganize individual drawers, divider panels made from thin plywood or MDF work well and can be fixed with wood glue and screws. Make sure not to interfere with the drawer slides.

For aesthetics, sanding and painting or applying adhesive foil is very effective. You should first sand the surface thoroughly and prepare it for primer or the foil. A common mistake is painting directly onto the melamine-coated surface, which doesn’t adhere well.

In summary:
1. Plan and take measurements
2. Cut shelves or divider panels from plywood
3. Redesign drawers with divider panels
4. Improve appearance by sanding, priming, and painting
5. Replace handles

If you want, I can also put together a short materials list or help with specific modification options.

I would recommend dividing the drawers with inexpensive plastic boxes. Just slide them in – no tools, no effort. For the look, you can buy handles from a hardware store and replace them with a few screws.

Hello bumumin,

before you start your renovation, you should provide more details about your Malm furniture. What size and which model variant do you have exactly? Are the furniture placed in a damp room or in a living room? Do you want to keep the modification reversible or permanent?

The basic construction of the Malm series consists of coated particleboard, which is relatively easy to work with but swells quickly if handled incorrectly. This means that if you want to add wooden inserts, for example, the material should have roughly the same thickness; otherwise, it can affect the drawer operation or cause instability.

However, here lies a commonly underestimated pitfall: the threaded inserts in the back panel are often either pressed in or attached with clips. If you drill additional holes, be careful not to work too close to the edge to avoid breakouts. You should also choose screws with the correct diameter and length, keep at least 3–4 mm (about 0.1–0.15 inches) distance from the edge, and if necessary, repair with wood filler.

For surface treatment, I recommend applying two thin coats if you are painting or staining, sanding well in between. This is the best way to achieve a uniform and durable finish.

I’m curious if you plan to integrate electronics or interior lighting? That can also be done easily if you plan the power supply accordingly.

Best regards!

Hey bumumin and everyone else reading,

I find the topic of modifying Malm furniture really interesting, especially because the pieces are fairly straightforward and offer a lot of potential for customization. :-)

What I really like to do: I get brushes, adhesive film, and especially good drawer slides for such a modification. Malm does have decent ones, but if you want to increase comfort, you can retrofit soft-close slides – it really makes a difference if you often work on the furniture.

I would add that small LED strips inside are great, especially in dressers. They can be powered with battery boxes and illuminate the contents with little effort.

And don’t be afraid of sanding. With good sandpaper and a polishing machine (which you can also rent inexpensively), it goes smoothly and quickly. So: A bit of courage and fun will bring you the best results! 😉

Best regards!
