Hello everyone, I would like to start a discussion on the topic "Billy bookshelf and pets in the household – protective measures." I am particularly interested in how to make a Billy bookshelf from IKEA safe when small pets like cats, rabbits, or very curious dogs live in the home. The typical Billy bookshelves are usually made of particleboard and cannot really be locked. Pets like to climb, sometimes nibble on corners, or can even knock items off the shelves. What protective measures have you tried to prevent damage to the bookshelf or, conversely, to protect the pets from possible injuries caused by the bookshelf? I am interested in all kinds of ideas, whether mechanical (e.g., additional components), chemical (surface treatments), or even organizational (special furniture arrangements). Maybe you also have experience with alternatives to Billy bookshelves in homes with pets. Thanks in advance for your insights and advice!

Hello, I would first recommend upgrading the Billy shelf with glass doors to prevent animals from climbing in or knocking things over. Additionally, you can protect the corners with plastic corner guards. There are sprays available for the surface that help prevent scratches. Also, make sure to securely fasten the shelf to the wall to prevent it from tipping over.

Hey, cool question! I fitted the Billy shelves with small metal mesh doors — it almost looks like a mini birdcage, just for our books. 😄 This way, our cats can't reach them and won’t knock anything over or scratch. And very important: don’t place the shelf directly in areas where your pets run around a lot, otherwise it quickly becomes an obstacle course for the animals. Any other tips? Looking forward to hearing! 🙂

You need to look at this from a different perspective: Why have a Billy bookcase in a pet household at all? This shelf is a storage marvel for humans but a constant challenge for animals. Cats use it as a scratching post, and dogs curiously try to get into everything. Instead, it's better to choose furniture that is explicitly pet-friendly or durable. A Billy simply isn’t designed for homes with pets; this is a misconception that arose because it’s affordable and practical. So why not consistently opt for pet-resistant furniture instead of constantly coming up with protective measures? All these protection efforts are just makeshift solutions that mask the real problem.

This is a good point and clearly raises the question of practicality. However, I would like to add to the discussion: many people have the space, are used to the modular system of Billy, and don’t want to buy everything new right away. My question is whether it’s possible to pragmatically distinguish between "animal-friendly" and "practical." Are there any experiences on how purely mechanical modifications can be implemented cost-effectively? For example, protective films, fixed covers, or modular additional elements?

That sounds very sensible. Does anyone have tips for optimal placement in a room with multiple pets? I think the topic of "protective measures" probably covers several aspects.

Wow, this is such an interesting discussion! 😊 Recently, I simply placed soft anti-slip mats as a layer under the shelves for my cat. This prevents claw marks and stops books from sliding due to their weight. And yes, it’s amazing how curious and intelligent cats are – our Billy almost turned the bookcase into an adventure playground! 😉

Be careful with weak shelf fastenings as well; I used a sturdy metal bracket set to ensure nothing wobbles or tips over, even if something is handled roughly. I really like the combination of mechanical protection and a small “repurposed” use by the pets. This way, everyone has their own space in the living room.
