Hello everyone,
I want to convert my IKEA KALLAX shelf into a cat house. I plan to cut out some of the compartments so the cats can jump through them or lie inside. My main challenge is how to saw the shelf parts without the chipboard splintering or tearing out. Does anyone have experience with this? What tools, techniques, or preparations help to achieve clean cuts? So far, I have only used regular hand saws, but I would consider buying affordable power tools if needed. Thanks in advance for any tips!

Hello @flo49,
Your project is technically interesting because KALLAX is made of coated particleboard, which can chip easily. Here are a few recommendations:
1. Tape: Mask the cutting line with as wide painter’s tape or even packing tape as possible. Important: The tape should not be too old, otherwise it may pull off the surface when removed.
2. Tools: It’s best to use a fine-toothed saw blade, for power tools such as a jigsaw use a blade suitable for laminate or fine cutting. If possible, cut from the visible side to avoid chipping on the outside.
3. Guide: A sturdy guide rail or straight edge helps achieve a precise cut without drifting.
4. Scoring: Lightly score the cutting line with a utility knife before cutting to further reduce chipping.
5. Cutting speed: Avoid excessive pressure and cutting too quickly, as this increases the risk of splintering.
I’m curious how many compartments you want to cut out exactly and which machine you have available? That would help me tailor my advice better.

Hey @flo49,
your idea sounds great for the furry friends! 🙂 I would definitely recommend not forgetting the adhesive tape; it’s really the best trick to prevent sharp splintered edges. And if you have a jigsaw, use a very fine blade – this way, your cat house will not only look cool but also professionally done. Good luck, and don’t forget to sand the KALLAX nicely at the end to keep the cats safe from injury. 🙂
