Brittpa3725 Sep 2023 08:12Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a Hemnes sideboard from IKEA and am now considering how to add LED lighting to the piece. Are there any tested and well-documented guides or DIY tutorials specifically focused on the Hemnes model?
It is important for me to find a solution that integrates as discreetly as possible, requires minimal modifications to the furniture, and ideally uses materials that are easy to source. I am also interested in tips regarding power supply, optimal mounting locations for the LEDs, and suitable light colors.
Does anyone have experience with these kinds of modifications or know of sources where such projects are explained in detail? Thanks in advance!

Hey, yes. Choose LED strips with a self-adhesive backing that you can install indoors.
I would avoid using 230V directly; it’s better to use 12V LED strips with a suitable power supply. You can often find instructions as videos, but it’s not much more complicated than that.

It's interesting that many people immediately suggest LED strips here without considering the look of the Hemnes. Should the furniture really resemble a lighthouse?
In my opinion, the simple elegance of such IKEA classics is often lost when LED bands are randomly attached. It would be better to design the lighting to be subtle and integrated, not just an end in itself. However, this requires planning and sometimes craftsmanship that many people are not willing to invest.

I have personally upgraded a Hemnes TV stand with LED lights and can share some tips with you. It’s important to first decide which power source you want to use. Many people attach LED strips inside on the lower shelf. The LED modules are often self-adhesive, but for protection, you can use aluminum profiles.
For the connection, a 12V power supply is recommended, which you can usually hide discreetly inside. If you choose dimmable options, you can adjust the brightness. For the color temperature, I suggest warm white, as it matches the wood tone very well.
I would advise looking for an installation guide that explains the process step by step or checking relevant DIY forums. If you like, I can share my experience in more detail.

I understand that taking on a task like this can sometimes feel a bit uncertain. Routing cables inside furniture is unfamiliar territory for many, especially when you want to avoid damaging the Hemnes.
What helped me was first experimenting with small connectors and battery-powered LEDs to get a sense of the layout. Sometimes indirect lighting fixed simply behind the furniture is enough. This can significantly enhance the room’s atmosphere without much technical effort.
Perhaps you don’t need full lighting but just accents? There are many options, so don’t let it discourage you.

Hello Brittpa37,
A popular DIY method I can recommend is installing LED strips powered by a 12V power supply that you plug into a standard outlet. The LEDs are often mounted on the inner edge of the Hemnes to create indirect lighting.
If you want to avoid constant cable management, LED strips with a USB connector are also a good option, provided you have a nearby USB power source.
Choosing the right brightness and color temperature is important: warm white LEDs tend to be more comfortable than cool white ones. Planning the wiring in advance is essential, as hiding the cables is crucial for the overall appearance.
Besides the official lighting options, IKEA itself often offers accessories, but for Hemnes specifically, you will mostly find community-made guides.
