ᐅ Which BILLY shelves are especially suitable for a child's bedroom?

Hello everyone,

I am considering getting a Billy bookshelf from IKEA for my young daughter’s room, but I’m not sure which models are best suited. The range is quite large, from versions with doors to various heights and widths.

My main priorities are stability, safety (meaning no easily tipping models), and enough storage space to hold toys, books, and possibly arts and crafts supplies.

I’m also interested in whether there are specific BILLY models that are especially easy to decorate child-friendly or to extend, or that stand out in terms of materials and workmanship for a lively children’s room.

Have any of you had experience with particular versions? Or can you recommend which width, height, or additional features would be useful?

Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello everyone,

I would like to add some thoughts on safety, especially since children’s rooms are often very busy.

The BILLY bookshelf, regardless of the model, should always be securely attached to the wall using the recommended wall anchors. Even if it seems sturdy, the bookshelf can easily tip over if a child tries to climb on it.

For young children, a lower version (e.g., 80 cm (31 inches) high) with doors is particularly suitable, as it allows easier access to their toys while also helping to prevent messes when they tidy up.

For those who want additional storage, smaller, flexible boxes can be placed in the shelves – these are easy to pull out and help keep things organized for the children.

In summary, I would recommend a balanced children’s room with an 80 x 106 cm (31 x 42 inches) BILLY bookshelf with doors, complemented by an open 40 x 106 cm (16 x 42 inches) BILLY bookshelf.

I agree with this – this combination really is optimal.

Absolutely! Safety comes first! :-)

By the way, I really love how versatile BILLY shelves are. My little one enjoys it when I add variety by using colorful storage boxes, small stickers, or chalkboard films to change up the shelf. These touches turn tidying up into a fun activity!

In summary, choosing the right BILLY shelving unit for a child's room largely depends on individual needs:

- For younger children, lower shelves (approximately 80-106 cm (31-42 inches) in height) and widths around 80 cm (31 inches) are practical to ensure easy access.

- Doors increase safety and help keep small toys organized.

- Wall mounting is essential.

- Flexible additions with boxes and accessories are highly recommended.

If the room is heavily used, opting for the more durable version with a hardwood veneer (instead of paper laminate) is worth considering.

Quality really pays off here.

Overall, it is a very solid and adaptable system for children's rooms when these aspects are taken into account.
