Hello everyone,

I own several Ikea Hemnes furniture pieces that often get dirty through regular use with children in my household. These include stains from food, fingerprints, as well as minor scratches or sticky substances on the white painted or waxed surfaces. My specific question is: What cleaning methods or products are best suited to effectively and gently clean Ikea Hemnes furniture from these typical child-related stains, without damaging or permanently harming the surface? I have already tried cleaning with mild dish soap and a damp cloth but am unsure if this is the best approach. I would appreciate any tips on effective cleaning solutions or procedures.

For cleaning Ikea Hemnes furniture, which is usually made of lacquered or waxed solid wood, I recommend the following approach:

- Preferably use a mild water-based cleaner, such as diluted dish soap, to remove dirt.
- A soft, lint-free cloth is ideal for gently wiping the surface.
- For stubborn stains, a glass cleaner or a special furniture cleaner for lacquered surfaces can be used, but always test it first in an inconspicuous area.
- Avoid aggressive cleaners, abrasive agents, or excessive moisture to prevent damage to the lacquer and wood protection.
- After cleaning, carefully wipe the surface with a dry cloth to avoid water spots.

This helps maintain the appearance and ensures the furniture stays in good condition for a long time.

I always use warm water with a little dish soap. Fingerprints come off really well this way. Afterwards, wipe dry. If something is sticky, adding a drop of vinegar to the water usually helps without damaging the paint.

This is an important point. Additionally, I would like to emphasize that for Hemnes furniture with a waxed surface, regular re-oiling with a suitable furniture oil (e.g., beeswax oil) can improve its protective effect. This is especially useful in households with children, who often have sticky and damp hands, to help preserve the furniture surface. To remove stains, a gentle eraser can also be used — it removes surface paint or wax marks without damaging the finish. Always proceed with care and test beforehand.

I also rely on warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap, but make sure to dry the surface quickly. For sticky spots, I have found isopropyl alcohol (70% concentration) useful when applied sparingly and not left on too long, followed by immediate drying. Be sure to test on an inconspicuous area first to rule out any discoloration.
