Hello everyone,

I have recently read quite a bit about different versions of the Ikea Billy bookcase, especially issues with the door fittings. So here is my specific question for the community:

Which particular BILLY variants tend to have frequent problems with their door fittings, both in terms of fit and durability? I am especially interested in the differences between older and newer models, as well as any insights regarding material or design changes that might contribute to these issues.

Does anyone here have experience or reliable information on this topic? Thanks for a constructive and as detailed as possible discussion!

Brief and concise:

Old BILLY glass doors with plastic fittings are often problematic.
Newer BILLY models with metal fittings are better.
Moisture worsens the issues.

Proper installation solves about 90% of the problems.

Doing the assembly correctly makes a 90% difference

I can definitely agree with that! At first, I had problems with the door fittings and got really frustrated. After getting tips from the forum, I checked the assembly several times and paid special attention to aligning the BILLY doors. It took some time, but suddenly they hung much better, and none of the fittings have come loose since.

Sometimes the issue isn’t just the materials but having a bit of patience and care during the build – after all, many small adjustments are possible. Encouragement is important here; anyone can do it! 🙂
