Hello everyone,

I am planning to mount my new Malm bed and the matching nightstand on a wooden wall. Since I’m not exactly sure how to proceed, I would like to ask: How can I securely and permanently attach Malm furniture to wooden walls without damaging the furniture or compromising the wall’s stability?

The wooden wall is made of glued solid wood, about 18 mm (0.7 inches) thick. There are no visible additional beams or substructures in the wall that I could use. I would also like to know which screws or anchors are best suited and whether there are any special mounting techniques for Malm furniture that should definitely be considered.

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

To mount the Malm furniture on a wooden wall made of 18 mm (0.7 inches) solid glued wood, I recommend the following procedure:

1. Use countersunk wood screws to ensure a flush surface.
2. Screw directly into the wooden wall without using wall plugs if the wall appears stable enough.
3. Make sure the screws are sufficiently long (at least 6-8 cm (2.4-3.1 inches)) to provide enough grip in the wood.
4. Pre-drilling is essential to prevent the wood from splitting.
5. Use suitable brackets or mounts on the furniture that also distribute the load, especially for heavy items like beds.

This method provides good stability and avoids damage to the furniture and wall. If the wooden wall is thinner or more porous, additional reinforcement is necessary.

Hello knutgla,

First of all, it is important to know the exact composition of your wooden wall. Since you mention that the wall is made of 18mm (0.7 inches) thick glued solid wood and no load-bearing beams are visible, I assume it is a so-called solid wood panel or a similar type of board.

The challenge with such walls is that the load capacity of the wood is limited, and there is also a risk of the screws pulling out, especially with heavy furniture like a Malm bed or the matching nightstands.

My suggestion in several steps:

1. Determine height and position: Mark exactly where the furniture will hang and check if the wall has an additional substructure on the backside (e.g. battens). These could be used for more secure fastening.

2. Choice of screws: Avoid simple wood screws. Use special construction wood screws made of hardened stainless steel or galvanized steel with a diameter of at least 5mm (0.2 inches) and a length of 70-80mm (2.8-3.1 inches).

3. Pre-drilling: Drill at least 2-3mm (0.08-0.12 inches) deep to prevent splitting of the wood surface. Use a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw diameter.

4. Load distribution: If the furniture will be very heavy, consider using additional angle brackets or strong metal brackets, which can be attached either to the wall or to the furniture. This way, the screws are not only loaded at a single point but the forces are distributed.

5. Alternative: If you have concerns, you can use so-called knock-in nuts that are hammered in from the back of the panel and then accept a screw from the front. However, this is only possible if the wall is accessible from behind.

6. If accessibility is limited, you can also rely on wood adhesives combined with screws, but only those suitable for wood and permanently load-bearing.

One more question: How heavy exactly is the furniture? Is it fully assembled or still in separate parts? This also affects handling.

Hope this helps for now!

Hi knutgla,

I agree with Dilen on many points and would like to add some step-by-step guidance on how you can proceed:

1. Check the solid connection of the wooden wall to your house structure – it must be secure and able to support weight.

2. For Malm furniture, I recommend using specific furniture brackets, which are often included. You can attach these to the wall if it is suitable.

3. Screwing directly into 18 mm (0.7 inch) wood: Use screws with a diameter of 4–5 mm (around 3/16 inch), and a length of at least 6 cm (2 3/8 inches). Always pre-drill with a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw diameter.

4. Use a cordless drill with adjustable torque to avoid over-tightening the screws and damaging the wood.

5. If you want to hang the furniture on the wall: Make sure that the wall mounts are exactly level and that the furniture hangs straight.

For heavy furniture or storage beds, I would recommend adding a second fixing point or corner braces.

I personally attached a Malm bed to a wood panel – it was important for me to have a stable fixing without drilling into the load-bearing wall. I fixed screws directly through the wooden panel and secured the furniture supports with brackets.

Good luck, and feel free to ask if you have any further questions!

Pre-drill directly into the wooden wall and then fasten with appropriate wood screws. Screw length should be at least 60 mm (2.4 inches). If the furniture is heavy, use additional angle brackets.

One more question: How heavy are the pieces of furniture exactly? Are they fully assembled or still in individual parts?

I also think this is important because I once had a similar problem and nearly got frustrated. Especially with Malm beds, the parts can be bulky, and if the fixing is not secure, you quickly feel unsure.

What helped me back then was to secure the individual parts separately and only assemble the furniture after it was safely mounted on the wall. This way, there is less weight on the wall at once.

Also: Don’t tighten the screws too much to avoid stripping, but not too loose either so everything stays stable. If you notice the wood splitting, it’s better to pre-drill a smaller pilot hole again.
