Hello everyone, I am looking for ideas and practical tips on how to make my IKEA Billy bookcases as child-friendly as possible. In particular, I want to reduce the risk of accidents, improve stability, and at the same time give the shelves an appealing, child-appropriate look. Maybe someone knows clever tricks, for example regarding fastening, corner and surface design, or the contents of the shelves, so that children can use them safely and independently. I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

You should definitely secure the shelves to the wall to prevent them from tipping over. Also, add corner protectors; that helps a lot.

Hello amrle, I understand your concern well – BILLY shelves are very practical, but safety is of course the top priority when children are involved. Besides securing the shelves to the wall and using edge protectors, I recommend installing the shelves so that no sharp edges stick out. There are also special non-slip pads for the lower shelves to prevent them from sliding. For the appearance, you can use colorful storage boxes or paint the shelves with waterproof, non-toxic paints in child-friendly colors. Just make sure that everything remains securely fastened so nothing can fall down. If you like, I can also provide details about the materials.

A small tip: avoid placing heavy items in the bottom shelf that children might try to lift. Light toys or books are better suited there.

That makes sense and obviously adds a lot of safety. Are there any specific fasteners that work especially well for BILLY shelves? I want to avoid anything that would damage the wall too much, since drilling here isn’t exactly easy.

That sounds great too – do you maybe have recommendations for paints or places to buy these boxes?

That sounds logical and, of course, provides a great deal of safety.

Yes, securely fastening is a must! For BILLY shelves, IKEA itself offers suitable wall mounting kits (sets with plugs and screws) that usually fit well. If drilling is difficult, you can also try special clamp-fix systems that require no drilling, but these are not always as stable.

Regarding colors, you can use non-toxic acrylic paints or chalk paints, which are available at specialty stores or online. Perhaps even those specifically approved for children's toys. For boxes, fabric or plastic bins are recommended; IKEA has a wide range, such as the DRONA bins, which are lightweight and colorful.
