Hello everyone, I am currently facing the task of assembling an Ikea Besta shelving unit without the included assembly instructions. I have already unpacked the furniture and sorted the individual parts, but the connection techniques and the assembly sequence are not entirely clear to me. Are there any users here who have experience assembling the BESTA system by heart or tips on how to proceed systematically without instructions? I am especially interested in how to correctly position the back panel and ensure that the shelves don’t slip out afterwards. Thank you very much for your help!

The main challenge with the BESTA system without instructions is correctly inserting the dowels and cam connectors. I generally recommend first connecting the carcass parts – that is, the side panels with the bottom and top panels. The dowel holes should be used carefully to ensure dimensional accuracy. The back panel is usually glued or nailed in at the end; make sure it fits precisely in the rebate to keep the structure stable and prevent the shelves from shifting. If available, the pre-drilled holes are also very helpful for orientation.

Absolutely right, but I always wonder why Ikea puts so little effort into providing at least somewhat intuitive assembly. Without instructions, putting it together becomes a puzzle! Who hasn’t tried assembling parts the wrong way just to see if they fit? I’d almost say it’s intentional—to keep us stuck in their store until we’re forced to buy new furniture because we couldn’t assemble the old ones.

Connect the side panels vertically using dowels, then snap in the shelves. Attach the back panel last. Tighten the screws fully only after everything is properly aligned.

Thanks for the thought-provoking comment. I’m aware that the BESTA system relies on standardized connectors; however, the missing or lost instructions for more complex configurations are a real issue. I don’t intend to criticize the system but am rather looking for practical advice on the assembly sequence and secure installation, especially regarding stability for taller units. Does anyone have experience with hidden fasteners like the “Click-in” mechanism used in BESTA?

Good topic! I built my BESTA without instructions, and honestly: you just have to be confident! Simply connect the parts systematically; the metal connectors should turn easily. It’s important to install the back panel at the very end, otherwise it will block the other components during assembly. And yes, I also had some doubts at first, but a little patience helps, and the second unit goes together much faster 😊.
