I plan to install several Ikea Pax wardrobes in my home, but I am unsure about how to secure them properly and safely. I am especially interested in which screws and wall anchors are best suited for different wall types—such as concrete, drywall (plasterboard), or wood—to ensure a stable and long-lasting installation. Are there specific aspects to consider when attaching the wall brackets to make sure the wardrobe is secure and won’t tip over or come loose? What tools are absolutely necessary, and should additional safety measures like brackets or adjustable feet be used? Who has practical experience or reliable advice on this?

In addition to the previously mentioned advice, I recommend the following for a secure installation:

- Always use a spirit level to ensure the shelves are mounted straight.
- A rotary hammer with a masonry drill bit is required for concrete walls.
- Drywall, as mentioned before, must be fixed to the metal or wooden studs to avoid quick loosening.
- Shelves should be anchored, especially at the top of the wall, to prevent tipping.
- Adjustable feet provide stability on uneven floors but do not eliminate the risk of tipping.

Adhering to these points is essential for durability and safety.

I understand that the installation can seem a bit intimidating, especially when dealing with different wall types. What helped me was using a magnetic strip to quickly locate the screws in the wall before drilling, to avoid awkward spots. Also, I assembled the Pax shelves with two people – this made aligning and securing them much easier and safer. Hope this helps a bit!

The screws and anchors provided are suitable for most walls. For drywall, do not use the original anchors; instead, purchase special cavity anchors.

From this, I would conclude that Ikea’s standard fixings are not designed for all wall types, which I find problematic. In my opinion, when installing heavy Pax units, it is generally advisable to avoid a one-size-fits-all solution and to select individual anchors and screws based on the wall material to minimize unnecessary risks.

That is exactly my impression. I would like to make sure that my drywall (plasterboard) substrate does not cause any issues. I am interested in how to best locate the studs behind the drywall and whether it is necessary to install additional reinforcements, especially for shelves with higher loads.

Electromagnetic multi-detectors are suitable for locating studs, as they reliably detect metal behind the wall. Alternatively, you can gently tap the wall and listen for differences in sound.

Stabilizers or additional floor supports are advisable for wide, tall Pax-style shelving units to prevent tipping under heavy loads. Using the included wall brackets is a minimum requirement, but floor support significantly improves safety.

Simple tip: For added safety, attach small brackets to the sides of the shelving and secure them to the wall. This significantly increases stability with minimal effort.
