Hello everyone,

I recently purchased an Ikea Hemnes piece of furniture (a cabinet) and am now considering the best way to protect it from moisture. Since Hemnes is made of solid pine wood, I am wondering which specific measures are advisable if the cabinet is placed in areas with higher humidity levels, such as a bedroom with a window exposed to moisture or a utility room.

What tips or experiences can you share? I am also interested in advice regarding surface treatments, possible sealants, or preventative measures to prevent the wood from swelling or discoloring due to moisture exposure.

Thanks in advance for any helpful suggestions!

The fluctuations in humidity you describe are within the normal range but can cause slight swelling in pine wood furniture. Clear lacquer provides stronger protection and seals the wood well; however, the natural look of the wood is somewhat diminished.

Oils, on the other hand, increase water resistance while keeping the pores open, allowing the wood to breathe, which is better for indoor air quality. This option is often more suitable for bedrooms, also because it allows for easy repairs over time (you can simply reapply oil).

Important: Do not use harsh cleaning agents or apply water directly to the furniture! Regular ventilation also helps stabilize humidity levels, which is the best preventive measure.

For your bedroom, I definitely recommend wood oil, especially if you value the natural wood appearance. The smooth, sealed surface of varnish tends to feel cooler and less lively.

Wood oil is breathable and provides good moisture protection as long as you regularly reapply the treatment. Make sure to use high-quality products that contain no solvents.

If you need extra protection, you can apply a thin layer of wax after oiling, which enhances surface protection without significantly reducing breathability.

In short: oils plus a little wax, ensure good ventilation, and avoid direct moisture exposure to the wood. This way, you can enjoy your Hemnes for a long time.

I agree with that. Additionally, I want to emphasize that the ecological profile of the treatment products should also be considered, especially for bedroom furniture, since minimizing pollutant emissions is important here.

If you choose oil, you should check before application whether the product is fully cured to avoid sticky spots or stains.

Also: Pay attention to regulating the ambient temperature and humidity in the bedroom. Ideal conditions are around 18-20°C (64-68°F) and humidity levels of about 40-60%.

In summary:
- Wood oil for appearance and breathability
- Avoid direct water contact
- Good indoor air conditions
- Protective measures on the back, such as a thin protective film, if moisture from the wall is a concern

Is it possible for you to position the wardrobe slightly away from the wall?
