ᐅ IKEA Malm bed squeaks despite new screws – what could be the cause?

Hello everyone, I have an IKEA Malm bed that still squeaks even after replacing all the screws. I completely replaced the screws and tightened them properly using the correct tools. However, the problem persists, especially when turning over at night or sitting on the edge. I’m curious about what else could be causing this if it’s not the screws themselves. I have read that sometimes it can be due to the slat support or the connections between the headboard and footboard, but I’m not sure. Does anyone have experience with this exact issue or a technical explanation of what else might cause the squeaking? Thanks in advance!

I agree with BiDennis. In particular, the joints at the corners and in the middle of the bed frame tend to experience slight movement, even if the screws are new. This causes friction and therefore noise. It’s important that you not only check the screws but also the slatted frame: Is it properly installed and secure without any play?

Often, additional reinforcement helps, for example with a second screw or brackets, to prevent lateral movement.

Technically, the squeaking is caused by micro-movements between individual components, which is common with furniture made from particleboard like the Malm. Tightening the screws is useful but not enough if the holes in the wood material have become worn or if the wood fibers have slightly swollen.

A more precise solution would be to secure the screws with a small amount of wood glue to reduce play, or to use rubber pads at stress points to dampen vibrations and friction.

Thank you for the detailed explanation; that clears up a lot for me. Sometimes it really feels like the bed is just 'alive.' I will try using rubber pads and secure the screws with wood glue. Hopefully, that will help – thanks to everyone for the suggestions!

Summary: Squeaking despite new screws often occurs due to movable joints, worn slat supports, or small gaps. Recommendations include securing screws with wood glue if needed, cushioning contact points with felt or rubber, checking the slatted frame, and lubricating movable parts. This should resolve the issue in most cases.
