Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of mounting several Ikea PAX wardrobes on a wall that is not completely flat. The wall has some irregularities and minor bulges, which makes aligning the wardrobes a bit difficult. My question is: What is the best way to secure Ikea PAX wardrobes on uneven walls so that they stand safely and stably, without warping the wardrobes or putting too much strain on the mounting screws?

Are there specific materials that are particularly suitable for spacing or leveling? Is it necessary to anchor the PAX wardrobes at multiple points along the wall? And how should I deal with larger uneven areas that protrude by 1-2 cm (0.4-0.8 inches)?

I look forward to your advice and any experiences you may have with similar situations.

Hello Timflo,

For uneven walls, I recommend first measuring the wall precisely with a spirit level and a laser measuring device, or marking the uneven spots. To compensate, you can use small spacer blocks or plastic shims placed behind the PAX frame. These ensure an even contact with the wall and prevent the shelf from rocking or putting stress on the screws.

It is important to fix the shelves at least at two to three points – top, middle, and if necessary, bottom. If the wall has larger irregularities of 1–2 cm (0.4–0.8 inches), it may be useful to smooth these spots with filler or attach a thin wood veneer as a leveling aid.

Metal brackets or special shelf supports are also suitable as additional reinforcement if the shelf is very tall. Make sure to use appropriate wall anchors for the wall type (e.g. concrete, drywall).

The general goal is always to transfer mechanical loads as directly as possible into the wall and avoid stressing the screws at an angle due to warping.

Distance shims are usually the simplest solution. Attach the shelves at several points, especially at the top. If there are significant unevenness, you can level the wall with filler. Always insert screws perpendicular to the wall.

I can definitely understand how frustrating it can be when the wall isn’t even – I’ve experienced this myself. What helped me back then was patiently experimenting with small wooden shims between the shelf and the wall. It also helped to align each shelf section individually before firmly screwing everything in place.

It’s also reassuring that minor unevenness usually doesn’t damage the shelf if you pay attention to the correct fixing points and use spacers. What helped me was regularly checking the fit with a long spirit level before proceeding further.

Maybe it’s an idea to gently smooth the wall with fine sandpaper in problem areas (if the surface is very rough), as far as possible, before installing the shelves.

Hang in there, it’s usually manageable, even if the beginning is a bit frustrating.

For leveling, you can use small spacer strips or plastic wedges placed behind the PAX shelf frames. These ensure even contact with the wall and prevent the shelf from wobbling or placing stress on the screws.

I fully support this recommendation. Additionally, it is important to ensure that the spacers used are permanently dimensionally stable and do not deform under load. Plastic wedges made of rigid material or double-coated wooden shims are well suited.

It is also helpful to anchor the shelves not only at the upper mounting points but to add extra metal rails or brackets near the lower part to ensure long-term stability.

If there are larger unevennesses on the wall that cannot be compensated with wedges, I recommend the following approach:

- Level the unevenness with an appropriate filler compound
- Or fix a thin counter batten (e.g., 12 mm (0.5 inch) plywood) horizontally on the wall to create a flat mounting surface for the shelf

This should allow for a secure installation.
