Hello everyone,
I have a somewhat specific question about furniture care: Has anyone ever tried furniture polish on a Kallax shelf from Ikea? I’m mainly interested in how the polish behaves on the usually very smooth, melamine-coated surface. Does it provide better protection for the plastic surface, or can it cause buildup, streaks, or even discoloration?
I’d like to refresh the shelf a bit without damaging it, but I’m unsure whether using polish is advisable or if it might do more harm than good. If you have any experience, it would be great if you could also mention which products you used and whether the effort was worth it.
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Has anyone here ever tried furniture polish on a Kallax shelf from Ikea?I wouldn't recommend using furniture polish on Kallax. The melamine surface is very smooth and doesn’t really benefit from it. For cleaning, a damp cloth with a bit of mild dish soap is usually sufficient.

I would like to refresh the shelf a bit without damaging itFurniture polish on a melamine-coated surface, like on the Kallax shelf, can sometimes cause unwanted residues. Melamine is a plastic material without open wood pores, so polish cannot be absorbed. Instead, polish tends to sit on the surface as a film, which often leaves streaks or a sticky layer, especially with polyester or wax-based polishes.
If you still want to add some shine and protection, it is best to use a polish specifically designed for plastic surfaces. Be careful to avoid oil-based or thick polishes that are difficult to wipe off.
My advice: to clean the surface gently, start with a mild cleaner (for example, vinegar and water or a special plastic cleaner), then apply at most a product containing silicone or fine wax components sparingly.
It would also be helpful to know the current condition of the shelf. Are there scratches, is the surface dull, or is it just slightly dirty? This would allow for more targeted advice.

Furniture polish on a melamine-coated surface can cause unwanted residue.I agree with this and would like to add some details: Kallax furniture is made of particleboard covered with melamine foil. This surface is not improved by furniture polish but rather contaminated. Since the surface is non-porous, no protective layer can adhere permanently; instead, it attracts dirt.
For sustainable care, I recommend regular cleaning with a lint-free cloth without any chemical additives. If there are small scratches, it is better to use a plastic care product or special repair kits.
Oil- or wax-based polishes are not suitable. They are designed for wood that reacts to the atmosphere. Melamine does not react this way and quickly appears blotchy.
Summary: Furniture polish is not effective for Kallax. Cleaning with a mild detergent and cloth is the best approach.
I once tried using a light furniture polish on my Kallax because I thought a little extra shine wouldn't hurt. Unfortunately, it only attracted dust and made the surface somewhat sticky. 🙁
I can absolutely confirm that!
My advice: just wipe it regularly, and it will look fresh. If you want to do a bit more, try using a microfiber cloth with some water and a few drops of dish soap. That really helped me, especially for removing greasy fingerprints.
So: less polish, more care! 🙂

It would also be helpful to know the current condition of the shelf. Thanks for asking, I realize I wasn’t very clear: The shelf is actually in very good, clean condition with no scratches. It has just become a bit dull, especially the white surface, which probably looks slightly worn due to frequent wiping.

Cleaning with a mild cleaner and cloth is the best method. That sounds very reasonable to me. So I will skip the furniture polish and focus on gentle cleaning instead.
Thanks to everyone for the helpful and quick replies! If anyone has a specific recommendation for a mild cleaning solution, I would appreciate it.
