Hello everyone,

I recently noticed a problem with the drawers of my Ikea Malm dressers—they are often difficult to open, sometimes jam, or don’t close smoothly. Over time, this not only causes annoying moments but also leads to faster wear and tear of the drawers. My question to you:
How can I effectively prevent drawer problems with Malm dressers? What specific measures are recommended to avoid jamming, stiffness, or even the drawers falling out?
I would appreciate tips that help extend the lifespan of the drawers without having to constantly adjust or replace parts.
Are there particular maintenance instructions, assembly adjustments, or useful accessories that are generally advised?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Kemal,

To effectively prevent drawer problems with MALM, I recommend starting with careful assembly according to the instructions, as errors often occur at this stage.
The most common issue is bent or incorrectly installed drawer slides, which cause the drawer to stick or operate unevenly. Be sure to check that the slides are installed horizontally and parallel.

In addition, regular cleaning of the slides can help, since dust and small particles affect the mechanism. A drop of silicone spray—no oil—ensures smooth movement without attracting dust.
Finally, avoid placing too much weight on the drawers. MALM drawers are designed for a certain load capacity, and excessive weight can also cause problems.

Many issues arise from assembly mistakes, lack of maintenance, and overloading. Keeping these points in mind will help the drawers stay functional for a long time.

Hey Kemal and everyone else 🙂

I find this topic really relevant because I had exactly the same problems with my MALM!

What really helped me: I stuck small felt pads in the corners of the drawers where they touch the wood. This prevents squeaking and also stops the corners from wearing out quickly with use!

Thanks for the tip about silicone spray! It really worked wonders for me, and now the drawers slide much better. :-)

Also: be careful not to overload the drawer. I stuffed mine with a lot of stuff, but that quickly puts strain on the runners.
I’ve also read that some people slightly adjust the runners if they have become bent, and that works great. So it’s definitely worth persevering and not just complaining 😉

Wishing you much success – this can be managed well!

Hello everyone,

I would like to provide a structured overview here to specifically address and prevent the root causes of many drawer issues with MALM:

1. Installation accuracy: As Leonardteo already mentioned, precise alignment of the drawer slides is essential. The key is to take exact measurements, check with a spirit level, and initially tighten screws only by hand so adjustments can be made later if needed.

2. Material care: Remove dust and dirt, then treat the drawer slides with a dry silicone spray. I avoid oily lubricants because they attract dust and quickly become sticky.

3. Load limit: MALM drawers can support up to about 15 kg (33 lbs). This limit should not be exceeded, as it often causes warping of the drawer bottoms or slides. A typical mistake is placing heavy objects right at the front edge.

4. Check the mechanism: After a few months of use, the drawer mechanism can loosen slightly. Frames or runners should be checked and tightened if necessary. Minor adjustments of the slides often solve “jamming” issues.

5. Protective measures: Felt pads or thin plastic liners at the contact points between the drawer and the cabinet body prevent abrasion and noise.

6. Usage tips: Close and open gently, avoid yanking or pushing upwards. MALM drawers are not designed for rough handling.

That’s a good idea to protect the surfaces, especially if the drawer is made of wood and not just coated.

Finally, I recommend using original replacement parts for MALM models if any component needs to be replaced. Cheap imitations often disappoint. This way, functionality is maintained for a long time.
