Some time ago, I set up several Billy shelves from IKEA at my home. I noticed that the shelves occasionally make creaking noises when I move them slightly or take something out of a compartment. These creaking sounds are somewhat annoying, especially in quiet moments in the living room. Therefore, I’m looking for proven methods or tips on how to effectively eliminate these creaking noises.
I’m particularly interested in whether the creaking is caused by material friction between the individual components, if it has to do with the assembly or possible looseness, or if it might be possible to lubricate or adjust something afterwards without compromising the stability of the shelf. Has anyone here had experience with which steps really help against creaking in Billy shelves and what I should pay special attention to?

Exactly, you can, for example, use some wax or graphite powder at the joints. I would not recommend oil, as it can cause the wood to swell and become sticky.
It also often helps to attach small felt or foam strips at contact points to reduce friction and thus noise.

I am familiar with this problem; the creaking annoyed me for a while, especially when you want quiet in the evening. It helps to place the shelves on a level surface since uneven bases can cause these kinds of noises.
Sometimes the weight of the stored items can also cause the individual parts to press more tightly or shift – just pay attention to even loading.
