Hello everyone,

I own several MALM dressers from IKEA, and with some of the drawers, I have the problem that they sometimes get stuck when closing or become difficult to open smoothly. This makes using the furniture quite annoying over time. My specific question is: What can I do to prevent MALM drawers from sticking when closing? Are there any proven methods or adjustments to improve the smoothness and function of the drawers? Preferably without having to carry out extensive modifications.

I have already checked if the drawer slides are dirty and if the drawers are properly installed, but the problem still occurs. I would be very grateful for constructive tips or experiences with the MALM series.

Hello laan31,

Your problem description is clear, so I can address it directly. The sticking of MALM drawers is often caused by the following issues:

1. Dirty or warped runners: Dust or debris in the tracks can cause friction.
2. Missing or incorrectly installed damping components: The MALM series often uses soft-close dampers, which need to be properly aligned.
3. Bending of the drawer side panels due to overloading.

My recommendation:
- Remove the drawer and thoroughly clean the runners with a soft cloth and some isopropyl alcohol.
- Check that all plastic guides are seated correctly and are not broken.
- Inspect the locking mechanisms of the soft-close dampers to ensure they are securely adjusted.

Additionally, you can lightly lubricate the runners with some silicone spray, but never use oil or grease, as these attract dust. If the drawers have lateral play, this can also cause friction. In such cases, replacing bent parts may help.

If the problem persists despite these measures, contacting IKEA customer service for replacement parts might be advisable.

I hope these tips help.

I fully agree with this and would like to add a brief guide to help prevent MALM drawers from sticking:

1. Remove the drawer: Pull the drawer forward, release the soft-close spring (this varies slightly depending on the MALM model year), and take out the drawer.

2. Inspect the runners: Check for visible wear, deformation, and especially dirt. Clean with a dry brush or cloth if necessary.

3. Lubrication: Use silicone spray sparingly on the sliding rails. Avoid oily lubricants as they attract dust and cause sticking quickly.

4. Check alignment: Make sure the runners are mounted parallel and do not tilt. Even slight misalignment can cause the drawer to stick.

5. Check the soft-close mechanism: The dampers must be properly engaged. If faulty, IKEA provides suitable replacement parts.

Conclusion: Regular maintenance of the drawer components and careful inspection of the parts is the most reliable way to prevent sticking. Gentle handling also helps.

One more tip: When reinstalling the drawers, ensure they are level and not hung at an angle. Proper alignment of the runners significantly reduces friction.

I know this problem well – it can be really frustrating when drawers don’t close properly and get stuck. What has always helped me in such cases is actually a patient approach: check whether the drawers are overloaded or filled with heavy items, as this often leads to warping.

Then, it’s important for me not only to clean the sliding rails but also occasionally to readjust all the components. Sometimes a small realignment makes more difference than you’d expect.

I find this check very important. I once had a case where a runner was broken, which looks inconspicuous but caused the sticking. The problem was quickly solved with a replacement part.

Be patient; furniture like this is great when it works properly, and with some effort you can keep it in good shape 🙂

Exactly like that.

After removing it, you can see if any parts are broken or stuck.

Cleaning, inspection, and if necessary, silicone spray – that is usually enough for MALM, nothing more is needed.
