Hello everyone,

I am planning to install a custom Kallax partition wall. I want to use the Kallax shelf not only as a room divider but also as a fixed partition between two rooms. My question is: What is the best way to securely fix a custom Kallax partition wall so that it is stable and also visually fits well into the living space?

I have considered attaching the wall to the ceiling and floor or perhaps securing it with brackets on the side. It is important to me that the wall stands safely without any risk of tipping over and that the fixings are as invisible as possible.

Does anyone have experience with such installations? Which methods have proven effective? Are there specific wall plugs, screws, or mounting materials I should use?

Thank you for your advice!

Hello dionmeo,

I am familiar with your concern, as I have installed custom-made Kallax systems as room dividers myself.

Here is a brief guide for secure fastening:

1. Preparation: First, check if the floor and ceiling are level. You can compensate for unevenness using small shims or leveling washers.

2. Screws & Anchors: For fastening to the ceiling and floor, expansion anchors or heavy-duty anchors are suitable, depending on the wall material (concrete, drywall, etc.). Preferably use screws with countersunk heads so they can be recessed flush.

3. Mounting Brackets: For additional stability, sturdy metal L-brackets can be attached to the side of the Kallax wall and the adjacent wall section. This significantly increases stability.

4. Filling & Covering: To hide the screws, you can fill the screw heads with putty and then paint over or cover them with thin trim strips.

5. Work Sequence: First position the Kallax wall in the correct place, then mark and drill the holes in the ceiling and floor, adjust and fix the brackets.

A common mistake is trying to achieve firm stability only with side brackets – this is often insufficient as the wall can still be prone to tipping.

If the wall is very tall, an additional fix to the adjacent wall can be useful.

I hope this helps you! Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Attach the Kallax wall to the floor and ceiling using heavy-duty anchors, and additionally secure it to the side wall with metal brackets. Do not use plastic clips.

Hello dionmeo,

I think your plan is great, but I’m wondering whether you want the Kallax partition wall to be movable or completely fixed?

I often hesitate when it comes to securely fixing such a large wall – it can be quite a challenge. Have you checked if the floor at that spot is really load-bearing? This can be tricky, especially with laminate or carpet.

Maybe a combination of fastening and a “counterweight” would make sense if you want extra stability. I know this makes installation more complex, but it gives me more confidence.

Otherwise, I completely agree with mesilas’ advice. Make sure to prepare well and use the right mounting materials.

Good luck!

That’s exactly what I mean, but you should make sure the anchor holes are positioned precisely to prevent any deformation. Slightly misaligned drilling can cause tension, which might damage the shelf.

That’s a good point. If you want more flexibility, you can use magnetic mounts or guide rails instead, but that’s a completely different approach.

For your requirements, I recommend fixed mounting with heavy-duty anchors plus brackets. This provides the necessary stability for room division.

One more tip: If the Kallax is painted or veneered, check the appropriate screw lengths to avoid penetration through the surface.

Hey dionmeo,

building a partition wall with Kallax sounds like an exciting project! 🙂

My tip: For invisible fixing, you can use so-called construction adhesive in addition to screws or brackets – this increases stability and prevents wobbling. Just apply a thin layer to the contact surfaces.

Exactly, and if you add a bit of paint or wood veneer matching the Kallax, the wall will blend perfectly with your room.

Important: Always keep the weight in mind. If your wall reaches the ceiling, be sure to fix it at all contact points.

Have fun with your building project! 😉
