Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Billy bookshelf where the back panel is very loose, which reduces the stability of the shelf. The back panel is only held in place by small nails on the sides, which loosen over time and no longer grip firmly in the wood. Does anyone have tips or tried-and-true solutions for securing the back panel better without having to completely disassemble the shelf? It would also be helpful if you have experience with different materials or methods that provide a long-lasting hold and make the shelf more stable. Thanks in advance!

Hello julurjan, I’m very familiar with your problem. The back panel of BILLY shelves is usually just a thin MDF board, attached with small nails. Over time, these nails often come loose because they are only driven into the side panel, which is not very thick or sturdy.

My advice: If possible, carefully remove the back panel and secure the edges with glue and small nails or screws. Alternatively, using construction adhesive inside to fix the back panel works well too.

If you prefer not to use screws, double-sided mounting tape for lightweight construction can also help, as it significantly improves adhesion. Just make sure the back panel fits perfectly so it rests evenly.

Instead, I installed small angle brackets on the inside of my BILLY shelf to further stabilize the back panel. This makes the back panel much more secure and the entire shelf stiffer.

Thanks, that sounds practical! Do I need to remove the back panel for that, or can I attach the screws directly through the back panel? Are there screws that are ideally not too thick, so they don’t damage the board?

This significantly increases the support surface and stabilizes the entire structure. First, remove the back panel, then attach the strips with wood glue and secure everything firmly until the glue is dry.
