Hello everyone,
I have a somewhat unusual problem that’s starting to get on my nerves: my Malm dressers keep squeaking whenever I open the drawers or move the dresser slightly. The sounds seem to come from friction somewhere between the drawers and the frame. Before I start taking any random measures or even disassembling the dresser, I would like to know: what are proven methods or tips to effectively eliminate these squeaking noises? I’ve been considering whether lubricants like wax or oil might help, or if certain parts need readjusting. My dressers are a few years old, so I don’t think screws or wood are broken—more likely something is tightening up or getting stuck.
It would be great if you could share any practical advice or solutions based on your experience or knowledge on how to properly get rid of these squeaks. Thanks in advance!

Hello Naugi7,
I am familiar with your issue – Malm dressers tend to start making squeaking noises on the drawer slides after some time.
I recommend the following steps:
1. Fully remove the drawers and clean the metal slides: dust and debris often accumulate between the tracks and the rollers/slides.
2. Then treat the slides with an appropriate lubricant. Important: for Malm dressers, silicone sprays or dry PTFE sprays are better suited than oils, as they don’t become sticky.
3. If the problem isn’t with the slides, the wooden strips or guides may need light sanding or realignment.
A common mistake is using regular oil or grease, which then attracts dirt and worsens the problem.
I hope this helps!

Usually, cleaning the drawer slides and then applying some silicone spray helps.I think people rely on sprays way too quickly these days. These products are often just temporary fixes for mechanical issues. Proper repair means looking closely, understanding the problem, sorting out parts, and sometimes sanding or fixing things yourself. Especially with Malm dressers, there are many cheap plastic components that wear out over time – lubricants won’t help with that.
And that silicone spray is better than oil? Sure, but why take the simple route when you can make it complicated? 😉
Regarding squeaking Malm dressers:
The noise usually originates from friction between the metal or wooden strips of the drawers and the dresser frame. Malm models mostly have metal guide rails with rollers or plastic glides.
Recommended procedure:
- Empty the dresser and completely remove the drawers.
- Visually inspect for damaged rollers or rails: worn or broken parts should be replaced.
- Clean the rails from dust, dirt, and grease deposits using a lint-free cloth.
- Use a dry lubricant such as PTFE or silicone spray, as these reduce friction and do not attract dirt.
Oil-based products are not recommended because they can cause stickiness over time, which may lead to new noises.
Additionally, check if screws are loose and need tightening, as wobbling can also cause friction noises.
